An open letter to colleagues: we are not mops After more than two decades working in legal translation across four languages and multiple jurisdictions, I’ve watched our profession reshaped by forces that claim efficiency as a path to our expenda...

"Machine translation would handle the heavy lifting, and we’d add the expert polish. Except the machine made a mess. And we’re doing expert-level cognitive labour to clean it up for cleaning wages.

We’re not mops. We’re translators."

A very interesting thread about how editors are being asked to step in to fill the stylistic void created by AI-written texts.

Congratulations Ruth! So pleased to hear this. I'm currently reading, and loving, Blurred.

Difficult, and I encounter the same question from French sometimes. Maybe if the text isn't mainly about gender, it doesn't matter too much if you lose the older usage and go for the more modern, readable option? I think your version sounds good. I don't have a consistent approach to this, though!

I’m writing a piece about freelancing in the publishing industry/creative industries. ✍️

If you’re not a freelancer in this sector but you’d maybe like to be, what’s stopping you?

If you’d never want to be freelance, how come?

If you are freelance, what do you love/hate about it?

Writers! Note that AI translation (under the guise of "global access") is being seen/used as the weak point to get AI into publishing (possible bc Eng lang publishing is weak on translation). Stand with translators & for more human translation, fairly paid!

Thank you to @thetls.bsky.social and Lauren Booker for this lovely, thoughtful assessment of Rachilde and her brilliant novel The Tower of Love in my translation. I'm so glad the reviewer enjoyed the humour as well as the weirdness.

"What distinguishes translation is the way translators read, a close reading that engages deeply with a language’s structure."
