Kestrels mating
Jay on the woodland floor
Highlight of today's walks was watching these 2 Kestrels. One caught something & sat on a post to eat it & then the male then tried to mate. Also Ravens, Buzzards, Sparrowhawk, Reed & Willow Warblers, heard my 1st Lesser Whitethroat & saw my 1st Whitethroat, Yellowhammers, Jays #ukbirding
Today is the 2 year anniversary of when I met the Ravens. They just checked me out from a distance then! Here is some of my fav footage: them courting, feeding each other, barrel rolling and some of their vocalisations. They are the most amazing birds and I am so lucky to have them!
Everyone can make a small contribution to protecting the habitat of these important creatures. Choose native plants. Plant native wildflowers, herbs like lavender and thyme, or shrubs such as cornelian cherry.
I sure hope you are right. #jailTrump #banfossilfuels

Maine releases a new 10-year wildlife action plan.
Another plan.
Another framework.
Another decade.
Over the last 50 years, we’ve produced hundreds of conservation plans and wildlife populations have declined by ~75%.
What they allow us to avoid doing is the problem.

Really informative video about how the current regime is handing our public lands over to billionaires. If you are in the western part of the country, be aware that it’s really going to impact us. Much of our land is going to be up for grabs.

Black Baza.
The black baza (Aviceda leuphotes) is a small bird of prey found in the forests of Northeast India, the eastern Himalayas, China and Southeast Asia.
It is a distinctively coloured raptor.

The image has multiple tangled, dwarf oak trees with vines and poison oak covering the ground around them. One tree in the foreground frames the image, and as we look through the frame, we see all the tangled trees and vines. El Moro Elfin Forest (just called Elfin Forest) in Los Osos/Morro Bay, California. The trees are all very old, but never grew upwards much. Instead they branched out to the sides.

The only way seahorses were saved here was by making them worth more alive than dead.
It worked.
But most species don’t get that option. They disappear without ever becoming economically useful….only ecologically essential.

"The AI boom is being sold as inevitable progress, but the real question is not whether artificial intelligence can do useful things in theory. It is who owns it, who profits from it, what it is mostly being used for, and who pays the environmental and political bill..."

This isn’t a debate between “development”& “conservation.”
It’s a war between short-term greed and long-term survival.
Our forests aren’t luxury green spaces, they are life-support systems.
Destroy them,& we destroy the air we breathe, the water we drink,& the climate that keeps us alive.

Before porcupines, ground sloths performed similar work at much larger scales. When they disappeared, forests didn’t collapse. But something important was lost: unevenness.
