Stirring: friend or foe?
Huang et al.: 329 reactions → stirring made little difference.
Cherepanova et al.: stirrers can cause irreproducibility by vial position.
Time to rethink the humble stir bar.

Different alkyl groups don't have different inductive effects in neutral molecules, which means that they only differ in their ability to stabilize positive and negative charges.

Illustration of the effect of dirty NMR tubes. The top shows a clean NMR tube and the corresponding "shim-map", which is very homogeneous. The bottom shows an NMR tube with a small black marker dot. The corresponding shim map shows a clear perturbation of several Hz around the dot.
Even the smallest contamination on an NMR tube can significantly impact your results. A dirty sample can lead to:
- Poor shimming and reduced sensitivity
- Potential contamination of the probe, requiring time-consuming maintenance
