Scientists Found 5.6 Million Burrowing Bees Beneath a Cemetery in New York. The Group Is One of the Largest on Record Researchers in Ithaca estimated the number of ground-nesting bees emerging from a local cemetery in spring 2023, revealing just how abundant some understudied pollinators are

Extremely buried actual point:
"If we don’t preserve nest sites and someone paves over them, we could lose—in an instant—5.5 million bees that are important pollinators."

Superb!

Posted a couple from this modelling session yesterday (moorhen on the moorings), but I do like the flowers.

A male stonechat with a black head, white neck patch, and warm orange chest perches upright on a curved stem of bright yellow rapeseed flowers. It stands above a dense, softly blurred field of matching yellow blooms, creating a glowing golden backdrop. The bird faces slightly to the right, sharply in focus against the hazy sea of colour.

Good morning. Today’s #BirdOfTheDay theme is #Petals&Perches any bird with flowers in capture. The alt is #WhatTheFlock any capture of three or more of the same bird. Good luck. #birds #photography #ECK

The SAVE Act Will End Voting Rights for Women in America The SAVE Act has passed the House—we cannot let it pass the Senate

BREAKING: The so called 'SAVE' Act has FAILED in the Senate and will not become law.

I wrote this piece on how in reality, this is the Voter Restriction Act to prevent women from voting. It is fascism and would have installed Trump as a permanent dictator. www.qasimrashid.com/p/the-save-a...

A photo of a white-crowned sparrow (Zonotrichia leucophrys) perched amongst red-orange tulips facing toward the left. It is a streaky brown and buff sparrow with black and white stripes on the top of its head, a gray face, brown eyes, and a short yellow beak. It is a bright, sunny afternoon and the bird is surrounded by tulip stems and vividly-colored flowers.

I think I have two birds amongst flowers, so here's a slightly different shot of a white-crowned sparrow I've used before. #BirdOfTheDay

Eight-or-so small orange termites are stuck in the beak of a black and white woodpecker. This woodpecker is clinging to the side of a dead and rotten tree as it faces up towards the sky. Its head is a combination of black and white but it has a bright red spot on the top / back of its head. It has a white spot in the middle of its back and on the sides of its black wings are a smattering of white dots.

Male splendid fairywren on a branch

“the breeding male is distinctive with a bright blue forehead and ear coverts, a violet throat, and deeper rich blue back wings, chest, and tail with a black bill, eye band, and chest band. The blue breeding plumage of the male is often referred to as nuptial plumage. The non-breeding male is brown with blue in the wings and a bluish tail. The female resembles the non-breeding male but has a chestnut bill and eye-patch.[23] Immature males moult into breeding plumage the first breeding season after hatching, though this may be incomplete with residual brownish plumage and may take another year or two to perfect. Breeding males' blue plumage, particularly the ear coverts, is highly iridescent due to the flattened and twisted surface of the barbules.[27] The blue plumage also reflects ultraviolet light strongly, so may be even more prominent to other fairywrens,” - Wiki

Anhinga’s are sometimes called “water turkeys” because they have long fan-like tails that resemble turkey tails. They spear a fish with their pointy beak and then toss it up in the air to swallow it.

Close-up of a Song Thrush, a member of the Turdidae, perched among leafy branches and red stems dotted with small dark berries. The bird faces right, its warm brown upperparts glowing in sunlight, while its creamy chest is boldly marked with dark, arrow-shaped spots. A sharp eye and fine, slightly speckled bill are in crisp focus, with a softly blurred blue-and-green background giving a calm, garden feel.

Today's #BirdOfTheDay theme is #ComeEatWithMe, birds who have food in their beaks. The Alt Theme is #Turdidae, any of the bird species in this group. Hmmm, I’m going with a Song Thrush for the alt.

Good morning, and I bid you the same good wishes, my friend. I'm already two celebratory dogwalks into the day; the consensus of Amsterdam people is that our brown Labrador is actually a small bear -- but they like that!
