Kākāpō action this week is about the chicks - all 94 of them.
I've just spent a week on Whenua Hou, recording with kākāpō rangers as they work day and night to ensure the chicks survive and thrive.

When you realize Danio (rerio) & Oryzias (latipes) are both derived from "rice" in different languages 🤯
Danio derived from Bengali word "Dhani" or "of the rice field"
Oryzias derived from Greek word "Oryza" or "rice"

What a surprise to see a new species of Amorphophallus in bloom! I bet my colleagues at the Evolutionary Biology Centre were also a bit surprised by its rotting smell when they walked into the building! It is quite a stinker!

Whirlwind protein purification (and more) day. People often ask me what a typical day for me is like – there really is no such thing! Though, I'll admit, today was a bit much . . . (But mostly in good ways :) )

You're looking at velvet malachite, Cu2CO3(OH)2.
A few warnings:
Please resist the urge to touch it to feel how soft it is.
Absolutely /do not/ lick it.
Keep far away from any Supermen.
If a wingéd creature emerges, do not agree to any pacts.
Let's talk about the science here.

One of the world's rarest whales lives in only one place: the Gulf of Mexico, where the Trump administration wants to expand oil and gas drilling that scientists fear could push the giant mammal to extinction.

While I’d like to see support for other clean energy (solar, wind, geothermal), advancing nuclear energy makes me hopeful. I would happily invest.
The Trump administration has rolled back support for many forms of clean energy. One exception is nuclear power. Trump wants to quadruple U.S. nuclear capacity by 2050, and a new generation of advanced reactors in development could signal the dawn of a new nuclear age.

Meet Bruce, the “beak-jousting” parrot who beat out all his rivals to become alpha male. Kea parrot missing his upper beak “has rewritten what disability means for behaviorally complex species.” arstechnica.com/science/2026...

Bruce is a New Zealand parrot missing his top beak. It’s a serious disability, but he has managed to become the alpha of his group, through creativity. Here’s my story about Bruce and the mostly mysterious natural history of disability. Gift link: nyti.ms/4cwVGT5
Nice little story about wheat breeding and the traits considered for our food system.

I picked up a copy of the new LightBio trial pink autoluminescent petunia to add to my collection. Looking forward to seeing how well it glows once it recovers from a rough shipment. Gotta support fellow flower designers any way I can!
Chef José Andrés, who became an American citizen in 2014, says food is both tradition and "also our future. The strength of America depends on how we feed ourselves but also how we feed the world."
Transformers! More than meets the eye!
This VERY ANGRY ROCK is actually a brown box crab (Echidnocerus foraminatus), a king crab found off the Pacific coast of North America.
The impressively compact shape is a defense posture, but there's an even neater feature not shown here.

I saw some really beautiful forms of life in the woods today.
Thrilled that the local ground-nesting bees have chosen our garden once again as a suitable place to raise their brood🌱
Now let’s wait and see who appears 👀
Just went to look at my bee house. Someone was there looking right back at me!
Mmmph, so good. A tiny bit of escaped cells but overall solid filtration of cells. All transgenic and all made without a hint of antibiotics or herbicides. Just careful selection by eye. Bonsai gardening FTW.
A bright green frog with tiny red polka dots. It is clinging to a branch.
We went out on a night hike last night and @scibugs.bsky.social spotted this adorable Red-spotted Glass Frog. These frogs are found in the Andes Mountains from Colombia south into Ecuador.
