As a final request, he asked to see the judge. Brought to the judge’s house during a banquet, he pointed to a roasted rooster on the table and proclaimed, “If I am innocent, that rooster will crow!”
According to legend, a Spanish pilgrim on his way to Santiago de Compostela was wrongly accused of theft while passing through the town of Barcelos. Despite his innocence, he was sentenced to hang.
