Moniaive in Dumfries & Galloway. The image shows the centre of the village with a mercat cross standing above a circular red stone plinth. There is a line of white buildings on the left and beyond the crossis a hotel finished in white with red details. There are lines of bunting criss-crossing above the street. The sky is blue.

The pretty village of Moniaive in Dumfries & Galloway, where Anna or “Annie” Laurie, subject of a love poem and a classic folk song, was born in about 1680. The real story that inspired the poem did not end as the poet had hoped. More pics and info: www.undiscoveredscot...

John Muir’s Birthplace Museum. The image shows an oblique view of one side of a street in Dunbar. A stone building on the right and a blue-painted building on the left sandwich a three-storey and three bay wide white building with a red pantile roof. It is flying the Saltire and the US flag. The scene is in sunshine.

Laidhay Croft Museum. The image shows the interior of a traditional croft house. There’s a stone flagged floor and wooden roof trusses. There are lots of chairs and other furniture in the room and the table and sideboard are full of chinaware. There are paintings and a clock on the walls. A door at the end leads into a smaller room.

Saltcoats Castle near Gullane. The image shows the ruins of a stone castle in bright sunlight. The tallest section is towards the left-hand side of the frame and there is a long lower range to its right. There are walls to its left. The area is heavily overgrown with trees and nettles. The sky is blue.

The little known and highly unusual Saltcoats Castle, hidden away half a mile to the south of Gullane in East Lothian. It probably dates back to the years after 1590, despite a date mark that appears to be two centuries older. More pics and info: www.undiscoveredscot...

Love this rather weird-looking fish from beside the door of the old dispensary building of the Western Infirmary. Designed by J.J. Burnet, the dispensary was built around 1913.

The image shows a view across ornate formal gardens in the foreground to a stone wall, beyond which the gardens rise steeply to a fairy-tale castle in light stone sitting on top of a ridge. The castle is large and the angles have slim circular towers topped off with tall conical roofs. There are trees on the two sides of the frame. The scene is in subdued light. The front cover of ‘Eyes Turned Skywards’ is shown in the top left corner.

In 1547 during the Wars of the 'Rough Wooing' the English invasion forces built a V shaped cannon platform at Eyemouth which was later extended. They also built a Fort at Haddington in 1548. Tantallon Castle also added a Ravelin for cannon defense it may have been inspired by these Forts.

The image shows a view from above its north-western end of the Kylesku Bridge. The roadway enters the frame in the bottom right and then curves to the right, with the bridge filling much of the frame before reaching the rocky far shore of the crossing in the upper right of the frame. The bridge stands on thin supports and the background scenery is rocky and mountainous. The sky is light blue. The front cover of ‘The High Road’ is shown in the top left corner.

The image shows Stirling Castle from the west. The castle occupies a horizontal slice of the image about three-quarters of the way up. Below it are the cliffs it stands above and a broad swathe of the image is occupied by the trees cloaking the lower slopes of the rock. There is part of a field in the foreground. The scene is in sunlight. The front cover of ‘Hide and Seek’ is shown in the bottom right corner.
