Paper alert 🚨
Check out our latest paper in Nature on "The global human impact on biodiversity".
This was an amazing project. Thanks to @francoiskeck.bsky.social for the great lead and inviting me into this great team to help with this massive effort.

Probably most exciting events in academic life are defenses of #PhD projects and release of PhD theses. Last fall 4 of my students defended their theses (by #MaraKnüsel #RebeccaOester @kirschdo.bsky.social & #HengZhang). Now all their theses are printed. A condensate of ecological knowledge! 🧬🔬🐟🦐🍂
We conclude that the lack of structure in the landscape is reflected in the lack of structure in the aquatic community.
A big thanks goes out to all the collaborators, most of them not yet here on the bluesky:

We investigated if #fish community structure is determined by the #LULC and #spatial gradients. Fitting distance-decay models and redundancy analyses, we found weaker-than-expected links between the #LULC, #environmental gradients, and the #community structure.

Despite high human population density, intense agriculture and strong pollution, our study revealed relatively high fish diversity (63 OTUs). We showed that these OTUs are randomly spread and we could not detect well-established richness patterns along #spatial gradients.
Lets start this Bluesky account with something great:
I am excited to share the first output of my PhD! We explored how intense land use affects fish 🐟 diversity in China's Shaying River basin using #eDNA #metabarcoding.
