Fungos únicos no planeta podem desaparecer sem deixar rasto Investigação liderada por cientistas portuguesas identifica fungos sem parentes próximos na árvore da vida, muitos sem dados suficientes para sabermos se já estão à beira da extinção.

Prevalence of Red List DD Species Limits the Application of the EDGE Approach for Fungi Despite their importance, fungi remain underrepresented in global conservation priorities and largely absent from indicators established for monitoring progress within the Global Biodiversity Framewo...

First PhD paper out on @consletters.bsky.social 🎉

We identified 8 potential EDGE fungal species, a conservation metric so far not available for fungi. This study also revealed a large number of Data Deficient species, highlighting the need for more mycological research.

The biodiversity monitoring standards framework is a linked sequence of steps defined by the standards that each step adopts within a set of well-defined needs, principles, and ethical guidelines (Center). Every monitoring workflow would achieve an overall standard rating (potentially tiered) based on the standards adopted in each step. The monitoring workflow is implemented (Right) once the necessary resources, human capacity, technologies, and data architectures have been adopted.

In this review in Fungal Ecology, Håvard Kauserud (@drhyfe.bsky.social) argues that while the ITS region is by far the best DNA (meta)barcoding marker for fungi, we should not use it naively or simplistically doi.org/10.1016/j.fu...

Statewide survey aims to put California’s fungi on the conservation map Getting to The Cedars, an ecological preserve in California’s Sonoma county, is a slog. Multiple rivers and creeks must be crossed, and it can be tough going on an often storm-destroyed road. But…

A state-funded survey across California has uncovered hundreds of fungi new to science, part of a first-of-its-kind biodiversity effort.

Often overlooked, fungi support plant growth and store carbon — knowledge that could guide conservation and forest restoration as wildfires intensify.

Thirty novel fungal lineages: formal description based on environmental samples and DNA Molecular analyses of soil and water commonly reveal large proportions of fungal taxa that cannot be assigned to any taxonomic or functional groups. Some of these so-called dark taxa have been encoded...

Tedersoo et al. shaking up fungal systematics, describing numerous new phyla, etc. based on relatively short eDNA data that we from beforehand know can give many spurious topologies in phylogenetic trees. (Interesting with a new phylum named Tartumycota 😳)

Wow, nature is too cool! Structures on stinkbug hind legs that used to be interpreted as ears are actually chambers with fungi. The bugs coat their eggs in those fungi to protect them against parasitoid wasps. 🧪

A fun commentary with @christinakaiser.bsky.social inspired by a very cool paper in New Phyt by @fungidownunder.bsky.social et al. showing that EcM fungal functional traits affect soil C responses to elevated CO2. EcM species and traits really matter!
