Your life is your life
don’t let it be clubbed into dank submission
be on the watch
they are ways out
There is a light somewhere
it may not be much light but it beats the darkness.
be on the watch.
the gods will offer you chances.
know them
take them
you can’t beat death but,
you can beat death in life, sometimes.
and the more often you learn to do it
the more light there will be.
your life is your life
know it while you have it.
you are marvellous?
the gods wait to delight in you?
Charles Bukowski

So!
Back home after my second infusion
Feeling rather drawn, tired worn out
Also feeling hopeful & grateful
This past week or so I’ve encountered some bloody lovely people.
While having my infusion a chap opposite introduced himself & I found out he’s an accomplished musician we sat talking guitars

When I ask why the poor have no food, they call me a communist. - Hélder Câmara

“The miracle is not to walk on water. The miracle is to walk on the green earth, dwelling deeply in the present moment and feeling truly alive.”
~ Thich Nhat Hanh

Good afternoon my friends. It's another beautiful day here in the forest! There is medicine in this moment. Smile. Breathe. Heal ❤️

Two pink and magenta peach tree flowers nestle together with green pointed leaves at the top of a woody branch and more leaves and a flower bud growing below. The background is blurry with a large tree trunk on the left and a pink flower and leaves in profile against blue sky on the right.

And with that, she got to work on the last piece of music
she would ever write.
By the time she was conceiving the sound world and structure of the piece, she was in the middle of her pregnancy. A significant portion of the work, though, came after our son was born and after her diagnosis. As the chemo cycles began, a friend and mentor sent her a supportive email, and in it was a line musing that the dual challenges of cancer treatment and newborn care must be "beyond the beyond."

My friend wrote a piece for Esquire about the passing of his wife (an extremely talented composer) and the music she left behind. It’s a beautiful meditation on grief and art and the way the two things inform each other; please read if you’re so inclined.

Pink cherry blossom on this morning's walk, very shallow depth of field with the background a confetti shower of bokeh in pink and purple as the far side of the road catches the sun.

The Peace of Wild Things
Wendell Berry
When despair for the world grows in me and I wake in the night at the least sound
in fear of what my life and my children's lives may be, I go and lie down where the wood drake
rests in his beauty on the water, and the great heron feeds.
I come into the peace of wild things who do not tax their lives with forethought of grief. I come into the presence of still water.
And I feel above me the day-blind stars waiting with their light. For a time I rest in the grace of the world, and am free.
from Openings: Poems (1968)

My dad used to tell my siblings and me that his favorite sound was silence. I get it now. In the midst of the chaos, in the midst of the turmoil of life in this world and in this head, I sometimes need to remind myself to actively seek silence, and the sounds it lets in.

Lake

Doctors say you have only weeks yet.

You go early to bed and draw meadows.

One day remembers a better one as she crawls out of consciousness.

Whatever happens happens now.

Red painted monuments bloom.

It’s a messy, wild-growing grief.

One child ventures out, the child, lovely and bespeckled, the child, a powerhouse, the child grown up, a person capable and remarkable.

Then the ocean comes for the land.

Drought is causing the reappearance of the canyon.

And of the split level house on a lake.

The world could be such a nice place if we allowed it. It's all so goddamn unnecessary. There's no need for any of it. It's so beautiful here. It should be so cool to be alive

LATE

We are not ever lost
and nothing delays us.
We carry the sun on our backs
and cover such ground
as you would not believe.

We are the colonists of dark,
the cousins of radiance,
who shall bloom
among you.

Listen,
do not move in your hard beds;
we enter your rooms
and the candles are lit
as if by themselves,
stars gather,
dreams pour
into your pillows,
memories of the moon,
warm bouquets of air. . . Listen,

even now
the breathing begins.
                              --MARK STRAND

Another by Mark Strand from The New Yorker, this one for the completist. An early version of "The Coming of Light" (one of his most celebrated poems), "Late" was never collected, and hence, has been relegated to the dustbin of literary history. Enjoy!
