A devotee with a shaved head, blue shirt and black trousers meditates in the New Hall at Sri Ramanasramam, Tiruvannamalai, Tamil Nadu, India before a large image of Sri Ramana Maharshi (1879-1950) wearing only a kaupinam (loincloth), with a body that appeared "luminous like burnished gold", and seated on a tiger skin. Today is the 76th Aradhana - death anniversary - of Sri Ramana, the renowned 20th-century Indian sage advocated atma-vichara (self-enquiry) as the primary method to remove ignorance and abide in self-awareness. Henri Cartier-Bresson, the famous French photographer, described seeing at the exact moment of the sage’s passing a "vividly-luminous shooting star with a luminous tail ... moving slowly across the sky and, reaching the top of Arunachala, disappeared behind it."
