📣 EvolDir is now managed by @eseb.bsky.social!

We are delighted to be taking the reins and express our gratitude to both Brian Golding who began this service to the community in the mid-1980s and to @rdmpage.bsky.social who ran this account until now 👏

True. And if consents for those grid connections are a bit difficult to get hold of it would be good to look into floating solar. Hopefully someone is actually doing the sums on it.

That’s a good point - I suspect it would.

Good point, although if the dams are already struggling will stopping evaporation be enough as the climate warms. Those grid connections could be put to good use for ground solar too.

And reducing evaporation from the soil.

Solar canals prove to be good for the environment but not for business Solar on canals was pioneered in India 11 years ago, but it has made little progress on the ground. The idea pioneered in Gujarat, has its own merit and challenges.

I found an item on the canals which suggests the cost of the mounting structure is getting in the way of more extensive uptake. As water becomes more an issue perhaps that will help counter the cost.

The canals lose 238 billion litres of water to evaporation each year.
Holding onto water and generating solar power. 👍
Should look at this or floating for artificial water reservoirs here in NZ.

Never had water kefir 🤔. I’d be struggling to replace coffee 😁

Not necessarily. Myriad of factors affects price and also viability. Scarcity; how often they fruit and volumn per ha; if cover or irrigation needed - they’re the big ones as affects ROI with establishing an orchard in the first place; open field much cheaper; ease of harvest and spoilage.

Thats why I slice them in salad as a garnish really. But I also buy them to encourage the market - they have potential for Northland as the climate warms and as farming becomes more challenging there.

Country Life: Dragon fruit a sweet choice for storm-scarred Northland? A trial to grow the exotic and striking dragon fruit is hitting its straps. Could the new sweet varieties developed in New Zealand be a viable crop for local growers amid a changing climate?

One of the challenges is people don’t know how to eat #DragonFruit.
I slice them up & put them in salads - tastes sweet & adds visual drama.

Volunteers work to save eels trapped in mud of dried-up Pukepuke Lagoon Thousands of eels have been rescued but many remain - barely alive - in what is being called an 'absolute tragedy".

This would break your heart.
#Eels are having a hard enough time of it as it is with out this sort of thing. Great effort to save them.
