I was pretty excited about this when I heard about it. Really brings together a great group of people and I like the idea that "metabolism" of any one animal needs to consider it's ecosystem so I'm looking forward to attending.

It’s gonna be great!
Thanks Ethan!
Can recommend. This is a great talk
Reminder that we are still running a free 1 day Midwest worm meeting this year for all students/labs that either can’t go to MAPSS/DevCell or want a smaller audience (~100 last year) to present to. www.vai.org/event/2026-m...
Ugh. I hope it’s not a broader change
Anecdotally, I got this same feedback this year for the first time from NIH and hadn’t previously on the same topic. I’m still hopeful that it’s a bit study section specific or topic specific rather than worms though. Perhaps we both got that feedback on the same general topic?
2026 VAI Epigenetics Symposium, May 11-13, 2026
🧬🪰🐀🪱🧑🤝🧑Join me and my co-organizers @andrewpospisilik.bsky.social @nickburton.bsky.social Derek Jannssens and Piroska Szabó for the 2026 VAI Epigenetics Symposium @vai.org.
The meeting is centered around phenotypic plasticity and variation.

First paper from the lab goes live on Thanksgiving day!? I guess that’s a thing to be thankful for. Also my lab’s first paper in our new major focus - identifying bio active molecules from bacteria that regulate animal metabolism! www.nature.com/articles/s41...
Two at once! Congrats!
If you look at NIH reporter this problem seems to have recently changed and several (many?) new R01s for nigms have come in. I have heard that NIGMS now aims for a 60/40 split R35/R01. Also, fwiw, I am neither ESI nor a new investigator so afraid those options won’t apply for me but will for others!
Don’t want to overstate it, but as people here might know I’m also a big fan of “fundamental” or “old-school” techniques/approaches in science and an advocate of them
Just replace analytics with “mathematical model” or AI or some similar buzz word
I’m sure @razzball.bsky.social never thought he’d be retweeted in the realm of science for this, but this is as true in science as it is in baseball and I’m really liking the parallels across spheres here
Thanks Ilaria!
Thanks Eugene!
Thanks Natalie!!
Thanks Walter! Maybe I’ll see you at this once you open up your new lab with all that exciting work!!!
Thanks Caroline! How’s the new lab set up going? Once you’re up and running hopefully we can get you out to VAI Metabolism dept for a talk. Would love to hear more about your stuff!
With that said it does feel odd to post happy science funding news in times such as these. However this, coupled with an NoA on an R21 with @saranowinski.bsky.social really feels like a win in a time where wins are hard to come by and an important point in my career. So guess I need to celebrate?!?
This is equal parts an honor and thank you to all the people who trained me, wrote letters, my lab members etc. Really looking forward to the next four years and annual meetings.
I’m really beyond thrilled to be included in this years Pew Biomedical Scholars cohort and to be able to meet all the incredible scientists in this program. I was in Scott Kennedy’s lab when he was a Pew Scholar and never thought I’d be lucky enough to also be one! www.pew.org/en/about/new...
Congrats!!!
Thanks Swathi! They both are, hope everything is well with you too!
So sad to have missed #worm25. With a relative new kid, and selling my house (offer accepted during worm meeting) it was just a bit impossible to also get to Davis. I did hear multiple of my lab members had a great time even if all I experienced was FOMO

Thanks. Sadly I wont be at worm meeting but two of my lab members will be. Newish kid at home and might be moving houses that week and all a bit difficult to line up given all the other travel I've had to do recently. Really, really, really sad to have to miss it though. Pained me to know id miss it
