Autopsy case with incidental ALECT2 amyloidosis with lung involvement. Essentially invisible by light microscopy. Wonder how often this is overlooked. 94% of cases had alveolar involvement in this study (PMID: 26912093). #pathksy #renalpath
🔬 UCLA Pathology's Dr. Jasmine Zhou, Dr. Wenyuan Li, and collaborators are advancing diagnostic science with a low-cost blood test designed to detect multiple conditions earlier, potentially expanding access to lifesaving care.

Bx for pt with AKI and nephrotic range proteinuria. Hx of IV drug abuse (with skin popping), and chronic staph infections. AA amyloidosis was the unsurprising finding. #renalpath #pathsky #nephsky
Transplant bx for renal dysfunction in a patient with shortness of breath. Granulomatous tubulointerstitial nephritis. AFB stain +. Sputum + for TB. Good sample key for making the diagnosis. 2 rounds of AFB stain to find the organism. #renalpath #pathksy #nephsky

We’re proud to highlight Dr. Chao Chen, whose dedication to diagnostic excellence and collaborative care reflects the mission of UCLA Pathology & Laboratory Medicine.
Her presentation, “Frontiers in Apheresis Medicine: Deceased Donor Stem Cell Collections to Facilitate Solid Organ Transplant Tolerance,” highlighted emerging strategies to bring tolerance protocols beyond the living donor setting.
Expanding access to transplant tolerance for patients who rely on deceased donor organs was the focus of a recent presentation by Dr. Rebecca Sosa at the 13th Annual UC San Diego Essentials and Advances in Apheresis Therapies Meeting.
