This silk crepe woman’s kimono, dating from approximately 1958, features a dramatic and large-scale yūzen dyed design of a blossoming plum tree. The composition is anchored by a dark, charcoal-grey or black hem that transitions through a soft, hazy gradient into a light cream or off-white upper body. A single, gnarled plum branch sweeps upward from the base, erupting into a dense cloud of white and reddish-brown blossoms that spread across the sleeves and shoulders. This bold use of negative space and the asymmetrical, vertical climb of the motif are hallmark characteristics of mid-century Japanese textile design.
