Photo of a Great Spotted Woodpecker (Dendrocopos major) perched on a branch, holding a peanut in her beak. This bird is mostly black and white in colouration - white underside, black back and tail, wings mostly black but each with a wide white bar and lots of white spots, heads mostly white with black markings (black crown, and a black stripe surrounding the cheek). The vent (the underside of the rump) however is red. There is no red patch on the back of the head of this one, which means she is a female. Her body is facing away from us and turned slightly to the right, with her head turned to face directly to the right, so we see the full extent of her longish grey Woodpecker beak.
#BlackHeads – any bird with black (not pimples!) on their head –is the theme for #BirdOfTheDay today. Both of the previous 2 posts in this thread qualify but as it is #WoodpeckerWednesday here is a Great Spotted Woodpecker photographed in mid-Wales in 2024. #Birds #BirdPhotography #UKWildlife #EKC 🌿
