Migrated to Bluesky as I'm excited to share our new paper on collective route memories in homing pigeons: rdcu.be/e73Qk

We found flocks remembered old routes better than pigeons flying alone, likely because different birds remembered different parts of the route!

This parent and hatchling Red-tailed tropicbird for my #SuperSeabirdSunday offering. With as many as 10 nesting within metres of the Park’s Hut on Phillip Island, off Norfolk last week- it was always advisable to have the phone handy

Because of the massive increase in #IngestedPlastic this year (number, mass and size of particles) were finding intact items inside our baby #seabirds. This means we’re able to get information on brands…including THIS! ⬇️ #SoyFish #PollutionIsADesignChoice #shearwaters

Four hundred three pieces of plastic removed from sable shearwater A. carneipes 90-day-old chick.
On the left are five plastic items (0.073 g) removed during lavage, and on the right are the 398 items (41.812 g) that remained inside the stomach after lavage. The 398 items could not be removed during lavage as the large volume of plastic created a blockage. Instead, these items were recorded during necropsy after the bird was deceased. Pumice (128 pieces, 6.819 g) and squid beaks (not counted) also ingested by the bird are displayed in the petri dishes

Most worryingly, we found evidence of neurodegeneration in <90-day-old seabird chicks with high levels of ingested plastic - protein expression signatures akin to what we see in human patients with dementia, Alzheimer's and Parkinson's (3/5)

As I just joined Bluesky, let me introduce myself! I’m an #ecologist currently based in #Italy, deeply fascinated by how #seabirds manage to thrive in the challenging marine environment.
I have a passion for working in tropical ecosystems and yes, I have a soft spot for #storm #petrels!
