Though most famous for the unmissable It's That Man Again, Handley started as a stage comedian. Many of his ITMA sketches there were one-sided phone conversations. (Remembrance triggered by your Victoria Wood posting & not to dimninish her brilliance in any way.)

When did we first start calling them stand-up comedians? Or have we always done so? I remember being taken to see Tommy Handley in Liverpool's Picton Hall later 1940s & don't remember him being anything other than a (great) comedian. And since you mention Bury, zillions of other Liverpool comedians.

Drawing of the Turkish baths. Four storeys high—one more than its neighbours—the building is in the vernacular style with plain windows, six on each floor, with the entrance—up a flight of stairs—replacing one of them at the first floor level. A large TURKISH BATHS sign is mounted on the roof, protruding from which is an outsize US flag.

Drawing of an extension to the building proposed five years after the baths opened, but not proceded with. It would have protruded around two feet in front of the building, almost to the front of the existing entrance steps. The large keyhole arched entrance and the many similar shaped windows, together with a highly decorated top floor façade, was clearly intended to bring the imagined east to the viewer's mind.

The central portion has three sections: that on the left is in the form of a spire-topped tower with a double door entrance leading to the bath-keeper's residence on the top floor and to the women's baths on the first floor; the right-hand section has an entrance marked Public Baths which leads to the men's baths. The baths comprised two swimming pools, Turkish baths, and 12 private baths for males, and a swimming pool, Turkish bath, and 6 private baths for females.

Advertisement from the Dundee Courier (25 Jun 1862) is unusual in two respects. First, it is one of the few establishments that includes 'Roman Bath' in its name. Second, it is one of very few where the management has come to an arrangement with the local railway company enabling it to offer return rail tickets between the nearby railway station and Perth or Newtyle. These include a Turkish bath, and are separately priced for first, second, and third class rail passengers.

Newspaper advertisement in the Merthyr Telegraph and the Merthyr Express (2 Jun 1866) a few weeks after the baths opened. This suggests that after the "Great success of the Turkish baths at Merthyr" the price of the morning sessions would be reduced from 2/- to 1/6 and a booklet of 12 tickets would be reduced from 20/- to 15/-. Or, of course, it was more likely to mean that the initial prices were too high.

Bathing can be an act of resistance, a way to reclaim the body, restore dignity, & stay human when all around you is breaking down. Sauna Aid, co-founded by Mikkel Aaland, brings mobile saunas to communities facing war, displacement, and loss and offering a place to sit, breathe, & reset. (See ALT)

Apart from the body soap and massage, the only untimed stage is the cold water immersion bath at 18°C! In practice bathers use the baths at their own pace.
