The #WarsawGhettoUprising really took off later in the year, but its first stage was on #ThisDayInHistory in 1943, when #ŻOB & #ŻZW resistance groups engaged German forces trying to deport 8000 to #DeathCamps. In the end, 1200 Jews were killed, 5000 deported, & ~12 #Nazis killed.

April 19, 1943 - On the eve of Passover, the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising began when Nazi forces attempted to clear out the Jewish ghetto in Warsaw, Poland, to send them to concentration camps. The Germans were met by unexpected gunfire from Jewish resistance fighters.

Jewish Labour Bund activist Dr Marek Edelman, who was the last surviving #WarsawGhettoUprising ZOB commander (Jewish Combat Organisation). The uprising began on April 19 1943. Like Marek in this photo (I imagine) we will never forget to honour the memory of fallen comrades.

Alina Margolis-Edelman, a Polish-Jewish physician who fought in #WarsawGhettoUprising and #WarsawUprising in German-occupied Poland, after WW2 worked for Doctors Without Borders, co-founded Doctors Of The World, and supported the "Solidarity" Trade Union.

She died #OTD in 2008.
