Visited our daughter down in CalPoly-SLO and had the chance to do some big and little birding, including some California condors (white-tag 86 & red 27) @PinnaclesNP plus this Curlew and willet combo at Morro Rock. Weather was awesome and included two rattlers
Sometimes you just need to sit back and stare at rocks, or at least the exciting things covering them like this one here with Rhizoplaca, Xanthoria, and others. -Seen in Central Oregon over the weekend, along with Umbilicaria phaea and what keys out to be U. krascheninnikovii on nearby rock. #lichen

Nothing is more satifying than seeing the intrepid inventory work of a group of lichenologists tracking rare to even common lichens. Here we are on the Oregon coast last week looking for Erioderma, Leioderma, & Sulcaria, as well as a host of Cladonias and others. Pannaria oregonensis is shown.

A Shingleback Skink hiding in bright green grass. This is a cream-coloref lizard with a warm brown back. It's scales are huge and slightly raised, giving it the texture of a pine cone. It has a giant, wedge-shaped head and dark eyes.
An adult Pink-eared duck surrounded by three ducklings with water dripping from its bill. The adult duck is pale brown with a striped chest and a black spot around its dark eyes. The pink spot at the back of its head is barely visible. Its bill is large, black, and downturned at the edges. The ducklings are grey and very fluffy with dark markings on their heads. Their bills are the same shape as the adult's.
Book triggerplants growing out of red soil. These are pink flowers with four lobed petals and black stems. The very center of the plant has a bright green trigger mechanism, used for depositing pollen on visiting insects.
