Latham’s #Snipe travel from #Japan & #Russia each spring, but their cryptic behaviour means they’re rarely seen. However, we are happy to report that this season we recorded 148 Latham’s #Snipe at TLC’s Silver Plains Reserve over 4 months, with Nov producing the highest counts.

A brown snipe with a long beak wades in shallow, still water, dipping its beak below the surface. Its reflection is visible. Nearby, a small rock and green stick rest against a pure white background, creating a minimalist scene.
A solitary Greenshank stands on one leg in calm, reflective water, preening its feathers. The bird's reflection is clearly visible, and the background is softly blurred with green and purple hues.

A Wilson’s snipe standing on a shore of decaying plant matter and mud next to a still body of water.
At the forefront is wet, green grass, with a bird sitting against the longer grass and reeds behind it. The bird is coloured mostly browns and beiges; it has horizontal stripes across its face, and a particularly long and slender beak.
Another grab shot through the lounge window. Only the last 3 years that I’ve found #Latham’s #Snipe staying here a couple of months or so each year & this the closest one’s been to the house. This guy’s a solitary resident, afaik, & rated #vulnerable
