My brother was always broke, but he had an enviable music collection. For gifts, he lovingly created mixed tapes — a small cost. When I bought a Eurail pass to explore Europe solo, my favorite travel tape from him included The Pretenders, which I listened to over and over and over and over and …
I was mistaken to think that the house next door was abandoned. When raccoons peered through a hole in the roof, I knew I had neighbors. There, they had a Birds Eye view of their world.

Once I chose a hill to die on, I cast the spell to raise trees around it. My forest gave me all I’d need. Wood for a hut, game to eat, a barrier to keep the witch hunters (and everyone else) out. The woods asked only one thing: my life on a day of their choosing. Each night, I watch for the flames.
