Glad to see this excellent paper finally out.
Full credit to the incredible @animalsexpert.bsky.social for leading on this paper on the evolution of same-sex sexual behaviour in field crickets, showing that it is not a product of mistaken identity

This evening we welcome Claire Spottiswoode as our speaker for the Alfred Newton Lecture. #BOU2026
A speaker stood before a lecture hall.
Session 4 begins with Greger Larson‘s keynote „The origins, dispersal and evolutionary history of chickens“ #BOU2026 #ornithology
In a strange stroke of fate, Will was able to demonstrate his expertise when we had two pigeons invade our poster room! #BOU2026 #pigeons
Indeed cool!
People have tied a hen on the front tip of a steamer to illustrate this capability in birds. Will find that video. Kites (resident breeders) in Delhi are quite acrobatic, given the massive wingspan.
Our new paper just out in Ecology & Evolution journal

Black kites-free ranging dogs associate in Delhi. While there are situations of conflict over human food subsidies, stay tuned for more information on cross-species social cognition in Urban Information Landscapes being focus of www.thinkpaws.org. @lucymaplin.bsky.social is doing it in Sydney.
🧵2/6 A big thank you to our #BOU2025 plenary speakers for their insightful and engaging presentations

Global warming is leading to more frequent periods of extremely high temperatures. Understanding individual behavioural responses across temperature gradients can help identify and design measures that enable species to cope with extremes temperatures, aiding their conservation.

1/🧵 Today at #BOU2025, I'm sharing my work using a #lidar time series to examine temporal Chiffchaff niche dynamic.
tl;dr as the population has grown, Chiffchaff niche has expanded.

🙏 @bou.org.uk for the travel award to be here 🙏
Kestrel activity levels decrease with temperature (in Portugal & Spain). With increasing global temperatures there may be less foraging time available. #bou2025 #Ornithology
Everyone loves a good shag!
Thanks @scottishseabird.bsky.social 😁
Session 6 of the @bou.org.uk Frontiers in #Ornithology conference is all about genetics (my favourite!). Andreanna Welch @durhamuniversity.bsky.social uses DNA metabarcoding data to investigate diet & reproductive success in urban blue tits. Are urban habitats an "ecological trap"? #BOU2025
The plastics ingested by gulls and storks at landfills ending up in wetlands 😨 #BOU2025
Day 2 of the @bou.org.uk Frontiers in #Ornithology conference opening with a session on approaches in disease & pollution. Fantastic plenary from Becki Lawson @wildlife-health.bsky.social on advances in wild bird disease surveillance within the One Health paradigm #BOU2025 ➡️ gardenwildlifehealth.org

Hi, I’m Becki Lawson, a wildlife vet at @zslofficial.bsky.social, and today I will be exploring disease surveillance in wild birds in light of the overall health of people, animals, and the ecosystem – in short: One Health.
Last session today for the @bou.org.uk Frontiers in #Ornithology conference: avian conservation across scales. Great talk from Viviana Ruiz Gutierrez @birdsoftheworld.bsky.social evidencing how #eBird data can be effectively used to inform #conservation & management, with meaningful impact. #BOU2025
Latest episode just dropped!
Humans and dogs, domestication or a mutualism?
How did this special relationship start? Hear from the experts! Hosted by @timcoulson.bsky.social & @sykhalid.bsky.social
Thanks, Cat. Collaboration on Egyptian vultures on cards, pretty soon. My colleague, @urvigupta.bsky.social has had eyes on Jorbeer for almost a decade now. Chat soon when all 3 (and maybe your team) can find mutually suitable time.
Session 3 of the @bou.org.uk Frontiers in #Ornithology conference and we are exploring avian socio-ecology. @nishantkumar.bsky.social gives insights into the intricate relationship between black kites, #migration & local people in India. #BOU2025
Always special to meet and interact with @arjundevamar.bsky.social at #BOU2025. What he was developing in BOU 2016 has blossomed into a strong methodology. Super cool; indirect citizen science :)
A big shout out to Fellow group of early career researchers @urvigupta.bsky.social et al. It was fun to show all we have done and continue to do in Delhi.
Loved the talk by @nishantkumar.bsky.social on black kite use of landfills in India! Really interesting to see the migration paths.
#BOU2025 🪶 #ornithology
Thanks @bou.org.uk for this opportunity to share some old and a few cool new stories about kites, especially the #BOU2025 organisers (@claire @mariusom13.bsky.social @ et al.).

1/ 🧵Bird songs and calls are an important way that people experience the natural world. They’re also one of the key means of surveying bird populations. In this #BOU2025 talk I will review @btobirds.bsky.social research to explore opportunities and challenges of #bioacoustics in #ornithology
Session 2 @bou.org.uk Frontiers in #Ornithology conference focuses on passive acoustic monitoring 🔊 @simongillings.bsky.social @btobirds.bsky.social gives a great overview on how PAM can complement traditional methods, but there are challenges & more to do when it comes to data analysis. #BOU2025
