A close up of Octopoteuthis deletron swimming in a strange pose. It facing away from the camera, with its arms are raised up and back over its mantle, making a sideways U shape. Its fins are are wrapped around its mantle. You can clear see the zigzag row of little white hooks on its arms and the white photophores on the tips of its arms. The photophores have been curved. The squid is orange.

A Schoolmaster Armhook Squid (Berryteuthis magister) swimming above the sea floor with its limbs swung back. There is some ink in the water as the squid recently inked. All eight arms and its two tentacles are swung back. Its arms have two rows of hooks that are visible, with the two tentacle having no hooks. The squid's beak if clearly visible as none of its limbs are blocking it. It has a large mantle with two large fins on the end half of the mantle. The squid has an orange colour with white on the underside. The sea floor is rocky with lots of round rocks, and it is about 65 m below the surface.

The hooks on the tentacle club of a colossal squid (Mesonychoteuthis hamiltoni). There are several hooks in two rows poking out of fleshy sheaths. These hooks can rotate and each row flanked by a row of tiny, marginal suckers. The arm is a mix of off white and desaturated slightly purplish red

Many squid species have hooks on their arms, tentacles or both. These hooks are used to help grab and hold onto their prey. I definitely wouldn't want to be on the business end of one of these squid!

What's even more amazing is this adaptation shows up in several different squid families!

This is the SEVENTH pauropod from this leaf litter sample and it's only been running a few days. A get for the record books, people. Genus is Eurypauropus, size is like...1.5 mm.

One of Ireland's less common butterflies, the green hairstreak, in a rewilding part of the farm yesterday.

Rewilding isn't just about getting more trees and forests back, but increasing diversity and abundance of *all* our natural species and ecosystems.

A Broadclub Cuttlefish (Ascarosepion latimanus) floating. It has a deep yellow colour with some dark brown spots and lines, and off white on the bottom of its mantle, so it looks kind of like a banana. Its two centre arms are raised and point forward, with the tips pointed curling down. Its other arms are going down with their tips curving inward.

When I post squid, the squid people show up.
And for sea slugs… the sea slug people.

Do we know what's going on with that "nodding" behavior? Is it intentional or just being bobbled around by currents?
