I am delighted to introduce the 'ImmunoPause' consortium. This is a collection of immunologists who are working on understanding how the immune system changes during the menopause. An important yet understudied research area.

Hormone replacement therapy may help restore immunity in menopausal women

Happy World Menopause Day. Reminder that as well as the impact of menopause on physical and mental wellbeing. Menopause also seems to be an immune-ageing event www.qmul.ac.uk/media/news/2...

Surprisingly, it is not yet obvious to all researchers and funding agencies that sex and gender matter in research, and should be recorded and addressed properly. So we wrote it authors.elsevier.com/c/1lxSmbah1w...

New paper alert #immunosky 🚨
What happens to our immune systems as we get older? What happens after the menopause? Turns out monocytes are actually quite important in their own right!

Check out our paper in Aging Cell now:

I am very grateful to my funders the @vivensa.bsky.social and @bartscharity.bsky.social for funding this research through seed awards. More research is desperately needed to understand the impact of menopause on immunity and I hope more funders consider this as an important research area. #immunosky

This study was an amazing Early Career researcher effort with Roel de Maeyer performing the functional monocyte assays, @oliviabracken.bsky.social performing the bioinformatic analysis, and my lovely lab member Justyna performing the Menopause analysis. I am very grateful for all their hard work.

Importantly the use of Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT) in menopausal females kept their monocytes looking ‘young’ and they had improved phagocytosis as compared to age matched controls. Highlighting the potential immune benefits of HRT.

In this paper we demonstrate that there is an increase in inflammatory monocytes with altered proteome in post-menopausal females, which is not observed with age in males. Phagocytosis is significantly decreased in post-menopausal as compared to pre-menopausal females.

I am so proud to say that our paper is now available at Aging Cell. There is a paucity of data as to how the menopause impacts your immune system, and the aim of this study was to investigate the impact of the menopause on monocyte phenotype and function.
