DTU Aqua to investigate the biology of an endangered species, funded by Seabreak The lumpsucker has been overlooked, but knowledge is crucial if we are to protect and preserve it. With financing from the newly founded charity Seabreak, DTU Aqua is starting a pioneering project to map the biology of the lumpsucker and investigate how environmental changes affect its living conditions.

🐡 Our feature article on our new project about the #lumpsucker (also known as #lumpfish, Cyclopterus lumpus) is now available in English! 🐡

Squid die when they reproduce. We estimate that sinking squid carcasses locks away 11-12 Mt carbon/year in the deep oceans. Increasing squid fisheries interrupts this sequestration and sends it to our dinner plates - where it is respired to the atmosphere. www.sciencedirect.com/science/arti...

The sandeel's sense of sand The sandeel plays an important role in the marine ecosystem as a key species in the food chain. Now research shows that sandeels are picky about the sandy bottom where they burrow – and this makes them vulnerable to potential changes to their habitats, which are sand and gravel banks.

Sand is not just sand when you are a #sandeel.

Particle-associated N2 fixation by heterotrophic bacteria in the global ocean Heterotrophic bacteria fix N2 in more diverse environments than previously thought, critical for the oceanic nitrogen cycle.

We usually think of photosynthetic bacteria as the main N2 fixers in the world's oceans . Using a mechanistic model we estimate that heterotrophic bacteria are responsible for 10% of the global N2 fixation. And it also occurs temperate waters. www.science.org/doi/10.1126/...
