A rain-soaked Puffin stands on the edge of a cliff on the island of Skomer, with its bill full of the sand eels it has caught as food for its chick (which is called a puffling). Skomer lies off the south-west corner of Wales, and is an internationally important sanctuary for breeding seabirds. A Puffin is a small auk, about eight inches tall when standing, with a brown-black crown, back, and wings, a white breast and belly, white cheeks, orange legs and feet, and a huge triangular orange and grey bill.

On the arbitration tribunal's ruling on sandeel fisheries, senior fellow Ruth Chambers said “A key test case has found that the UK and Scottish Government’s proposals to end industrial sandeel fishing to help protect iconic seabirds like puffins should be upheld. This is a landmark moment for UK marine conservation. The government must now make good on its pledge to address some procedural errors in the process, after which the sandeels fisheries should be closed for good.”
