"A lively gathering of terns stands along the sandy edge of Holly Beach, Louisiana, where the Gulf’s gentle waves roll in with a soft hiss. The birds form a loose cluster near the shoreline, their white bodies bright against the pale sand. Royal Terns dominate the group — tall, sleek birds with crisp white plumage, black caps that look like windswept crests, and long, vivid orange beaks that catch the sunlight. Mixed among them are smaller Forster’s Terns, more delicate in build, their softer gray wings and shorter bills giving them a subtler presence beside their royal cousins. Some birds face the water, some face inland, and others seem to be calling out, their beaks slightly open as if in mid‑conversation. A few stand close together like companions; others keep a bit of distance, each bird claiming its own patch of sand.
