Photo by Kort Duce A great horned owl hunts from its perch on a metal fence post in Longmont, Colorado. In this vertical black-and-white photograph, the owl balances atop a simple metal stake rising from a sea of prairie grasses. Positioned in the upper left quadrant, it is shown in left profile, its head sharply turned back as it fixes an intense gaze on prey moving below. Moments after this frame was captured, the owl launched from the post and dropped into the grass to claim its meal.
