"Right, young man, you come along with me."
"But luvvie, I can't go anywhere in these ridiculous shoes."

“Yesterday
In Castle street
I saw two goblins at my feet
I saw a horse without a head
Carrying the dead
To the graveyard
Near Turner’s Cross.
I am the madwoman of Cork
No one talks to me“

A black-and-white, square-format photograph shows a small child standing alone on a dark paved path in a foggy outdoor landscape. The child is centered in the frame and faces the camera with a solemn, almost haunting expression. They have dark curly hair adorned with a floral crown or cluster of light-colored flowers, and they wear a long light dress under an oversized, shaggy white coat that hangs heavily around their shoulders. In both hands, they hold a shiny basket or pail at waist level, suggesting a costume or ceremonial outfit.

The setting is dim and mist-covered, with an open grassy field stretching behind the child and tall evergreen trees fading into dense fog in the background. The mist softens the outlines of the trees and makes the distance look blurred and empty. The foreground pavement appears wet or very dark, adding to the cold, eerie atmosphere. The image has a quiet, gothic, cinematic mood, with strong contrast between the child’s pale clothing and the shadowy ground and fog-darkened landscape.

The roots of a mature Silver Birch, blown over in one of this year's storms. Birches grow faster than most woodland trees and seem more vulnerable than their oak and beech neighbours once they've grown to a substantial height and width.

Uh-oh. Shouldn't have strayed so near that mysterious shrine in the woods.

But surely relationships between adult men were considered shameful in Roman society? I thought there was clear evidence that Antinous died at the age of 20 and, of course, it was after his death that Hadrian ordered his likenesses to be made, so he would have been an adult then.

I love these 'Dandy's Perambulations' cartoons from 1819. No idea who drew them but they make me chortle.

Sorry, I should have realised. And yes, I can see the car keys in the bowl scenario (for some reason I can imagine Denis Wheatley at the same party). I've just reposted your photo of the memorial to Kit Marlowe, a minor hero of mine.

A closer view of the objects. Both photos were taken by me back in 1998 and scanned from the prints. A place I'd forgotten all about until I unearthed them - worth a revisit.

The Raven's Bowl beside an ancient track in the hills above Llangollen, North Wales. Probably the base of a medieval wayside cross but it's unknown what happened to the cross itself. The hollow socket forms the 'bowl' of its romantic name.

I had no idea Mr Underwood was gay. What 'industry', by the way? Authoring? Ghost-hunting? I'm intrigued!

Wonderful, but personally I would consider either a bomb going off a meteorite landing in my local wood cause for amazement. Just shows how insouciant Foreteans can become.

Peter Underwood's books were a starting point so in that sense invaluable but increasingly I got the feeling he was a bit of a chancer (and cannibal too it seems). Green and Alexander supplanted him. I did correspond with Underwood briefly: his letter was on Savage Club stationery. Pretentious, moi?
