THE SHORT ARM OF THE LAW:
(Two police officers lowering a child holding a flashlight into a conveniently child-sized hole in a hillside. The kid, who just got his feet in, is already a little freaked out. Going by the caption, the boys in blue weren't able to reach it themselves.)

"Just hand out some of th' bones that's reportedly in there, an' don't be scared--remember we're right here!"

From August 30, 1947, two cops lowering a kid into a hole to check for human remains. On the postwar comics page next to Blondie and Donald Duck. Fun for the whole family!
