#TheTenX5 49. "Shut Up Kiss Me" by Angel Olsen (2016) (11 PTS)

due to clerical error on my part not every '10s song from my #1C000LEST list is in my top 50! But this one sure is, how am I going to allow a song with a bridge that grabs you by the shoulders this hard not get in? I can't. I won't.

See if this cover gets more attention!

In spite of the back-up, I think I must be among the firmest players when it comes to ranking.

E.g. idca moved 'Into You' into HMs less than a year after bonusing it in #1C000LEST, and I could never. Thought about this stuff for way too long!

Returns from my #1C000LEST list, and with good reason.

Delighted as I was to see Hate enter #1C000LEST, I'm even more chuffed to see them get recognised for more than that one (brilliant) tune.

Anyway, I had plenty to say about Itsuka and Gonchi during #1C000LEST in the post below, and there's no sense in repeating myself now - except to say that, yes, I have also picked the one you've maybe heard of further down my list.

A non-exhaustive list of 4s from that decade would include:

- two of my intended #TheN0ughtie5 bonuses
- two more songs I picked in #1C000LEST
- another from my #FearofMu21C list
- my favourite 00s Gaga single

The only song from the 2020s to make my cut for #1C000LEST. Everyone uses adjectives like "massive," "momentous" & "monumental" to describe this duet. Because it is! But there's a real intimacy to it too.

Better than 'The Message', thanks to #1C000LEST for backing me up.

Oh no no no... only 'Strange Fruit' in LDI25 has ever managed that.

Nothing did in #1C000LEST, even with the double bonus system (Donna had 21).

Well yes, I was going to save this comment for Bs, but...

UK Top 10 hit produced by and featuring a twice-BPHM runner-up and #1C000LEST winner 'The Crown' might be the luckiest B since 'Calm Down'!😄

As it was in FOM (2 places higher) and possibly even #1C000LEST (6 places higher than that, for the century).

'I Feel Love' was defeated by 'Superstition' in the #1C000LEST finale.

It hasn't been a good year for Donna.

In February, she'd already lost her record for largest winning margin to 'Strange Fruit' in #LetsDoIt25 (117 points).

In June came 'Superstition'.

Hello - I received a submission for this earlier, which I have to say I'd completely forgotten about!

We never got to Stage 2 and I'm now far too busy with other stuff. So if you don't mind I'm putting this in the "nice idea, will never take off" pile.

Thanks for your interest!

The #1C000LEST winner is in the house!

Obvious pick, but no impact until August.

Previous challenges suggest Dancefloor will be a lock, although its vote in #1C000LEST was much softer than FOM.

Not bad for a band that didn't make the final of #1c000lest

Ha, it's a pithy summary of the difference in electorate I think!

I thought the 2022 and 2023 results were a bit silly, but U250 and #1C000LEST seemed too far the other way.

1 0 0 0

It must have been, sorry...

The *effective* split vote is when you can still muster 50% plus for your top one, two or three songs combined.

The Beatles and Stevie Wonder in #1C000LEST were the best examples of a one. In a regular challenge it was obviously harder, but Stevie's top two did it.

Well, strictly speaking it does... but I hardly expect to receive 21 accurate applications overnight! Only #1C000LEST had that many and they took well over two weeks.

In any case, my intention was to give it 12 hours before checking, and possibly even to prioritise emails from familiar names.

That general trend is, of course,

"this is the sort of thing that happens when Rule 5 isn't in play".

For the Top 100 will also be without the act who finished 5th in #1C000LEST.

PUBLIC ENEMY
(highest scorer also 42pts, 'By The Time I Get To Arizona')

#ALL50RTS

Scored NOTHING in 50 days of new posts, not even an HM.

Fewer points than luminaries such as Jasper fucking Carrott.

The Top 100 begins at 47 points, so this is a big miss for an act who were 2nd highest total scorers in FOM and had two singles in the #1C000LEST Top 50.

I think the clincher here is that PE - who did so well In #1C000LEST - are also far from guaranteed a spot. Kendrick might be the only rapper to scrape in.

And you can say all you like about split vote, but certain 70s icons (not just him) will easily end up with three or four.

Now in a cocktail bar that’s playing the #1C000LEST no.6…

0 0 1 0

I don't really listen to MSP myself any more, but a lot of these picks are very firmly embedded as my all-time favourites.

I've always found it better to go with instinct than try too hard. Even more so here as I didn't have any prep time due to running #1C000LEST.

I’m entertained by how much all the #1C000LEST results would have boiled their piss.

It’s mildly odd though, as the NME was certainly championing black music to at least the mid 80s. Maybe the readership was always largely inclined to white boys with guitars though.

6 0 1 0

This may help!

(I am after all reluctant to pick my favourite Black song of 1985, which made the last 16 in the year poll, appeared in not-very-different form in the Closers poll and was responsible for my first rant in #1C000LEST)

Yep, I can’t say you didn’t warn me

Having said that, I was much more focused on the #1c000lest options back in March so completely forgot about the specific exceptions (and the VFs generally) by the time it came to choosing these!
