Call to Action # 1 - Indigenous Watchdog Commit to reducing the number of Aboriginal children in care

Digging back into the #94CallstoAction and the TRC Report. Here's the Indigenous Watchdog entry for the first call, which they list as "stalled" due to a lack of "formal mechanism or coordinated plan in place" to monitor or assess neglect. www.indigenouswatchdog.org/cta/call-to-...

The stakes of land alienation are high for settler states, industry, and citizens, since they form the basis of the Canadian economy. For example:

CANADA LEADS in mining extraction globally, producing over 60 minerals and metals, with total domestic exports valued at $81.4 billion per year. This amounts to over 20 percent of total national exports.

THE FOREST SECTOR generated $24.6 billion to Canada’s GDP in a single year, $24.2 billion to Canada’s trade balance, and 186,838 jobs in 2017, not counting all the secondary industries to which it contributes.

City of Calgary Mayor and Councillors,

It is with great disappointment that our first communication to the newly formed council of the City of Calgary is to speak to an act of reprehensible violent raids perpetrated by the Calgary Police Service upon the most vulnerable residents.

There can be no confusion that this was an act of deliberate harm and the continued genocide of First Nations, Inuit and Métis peoples, who as you know disproportionately represent the population of homelessness in Calgary, as a direct result colonial violence.
Targeting, arresting and dismantling desperate survival conditions of the most vulnerable people in the city will do nothing but perpetuate harm and cause further trauma. The loss of belongings, punitive fines and jail terms serve only to put the means of survival further from reach. Shelters and group facilities are not alternatives to housing and culturally appropriate wrap around services; they are places where people are forced to give up loved pets and belongings and are subjected to physical and emotional violence.
Police sweeps are colonial tactics used to further displace vulnerable people and incarcerate Indigenous peoples to continue the displacement and assimilation tactics of land theft. They are not, as police Chief McLellan states “a collaborative and compassionate approach to addressing concerns about disorder and violent crime.”
The measured and misleading language from the police Chief including statements such as “Arresting is connecting,” and “Arrests will be made when necessary, but always with dignity and care.” are intended to deliberately manipulate the public and camouflage the violence of raids and imprisonment each of the victims of Wednesday’s attacks will suffer from.

This city is situated on Treaty 7 Territory, a councillor or mayor has a duty to represent residents as good Treaty partners, honouring the true intent and spirit of Treaty 7, and the responsibility to protect from colonial institutions, the rights of Indigenous peoples to live in freedom, peace and security.

We have a duty to ensure the care of survivors by acting on the fulfillment of all 94 Calls to Action and ending the continuing violence with the full implementation of the 231 Calls for Justice.

Non-Indigenous people carry the responsibility for the governing structures of Canada, its provinces and municipalities and an obligation to end the colonial violence that continues today. Each one of us is responsible for dismantling the systems that harm children first.

Already we see division between nations & people regarding Ring of Fire resource dev & pipelines. Alberta & Ontario want to throw away legislation that supports an equitable, livable country.

Calgary's School Resource Officer (SRO) program, launched in the mid 1970s, underwent a review from 2021 to 2023. Robinson believes little has improved since, adding that police also haven't addressed their role in violence against Indigenous people, including the apprehending and forcing of kids into residential schools.

"Our children are still being watched over by police and that's not fulfilling the Calls to Action and reconciliation in any capacity," she said, referring to the Truth and Reconciliation Commission's individual instructions meant to guide Canadian institutions.

Rather than police officers, Vásquez Jiménez believes boosting funding for education (that would allow for smaller classes, more educators and mental health supports) and improved community resources (for tackling food insecurity, before and after school programming and youth employment) are better options to address the root causes of violence.
"Healthy communities — including schools — have more supports and resources, not policing and carceral measures," she said.

"Even the most sophisticated studies in the literature — with incredible statistical kinds of analysis — have found no link between school safety and the presence of the SRO program or officer," he said from Edmonton.

Text reads Resources and funding - SRO Officers Rather than police officers, Vásquez Jiménez believes boosting funding for education (that would allow for smaller classes, more educators and mental health supports) and improved community resources (for tackling food insecurity, before and after school programming and youth employment) are better options to address the root causes of violence. "Healthy communities — including schools — have more supports and resources, not policing and carceral measures," she said. "Even the most sophisticated studies in the literature — with incredible statistical kinds of analysis — have found no link between school safety and the presence of the SRO program or officer," he said from Edmonton. A decade later, that promise is largely unfulfilled.

Tracking by the Yellowhead Institute shows only 13 of the 94 Calls to Action have been completed. At this rate, researchers calculate, it will take until 2081 to finish the work.
