Also, universities should look at differences in student performance outcomes for different types of students. If there are performance gaps, it’s likely that there is insufficient support in place. #AutChat

In my classes, I tell all my students "I'm working on this paper or this talk. If anyone would like to work on it with me, let me know" because when I was in undergrad I was so anxious and I didn't understand what I was being invited to (in that case, to work in a professor's lab.) 1/ #AutChat
But really... we really need digital copies of the lecture slides.
Plus the ability to take notes in class with a laptop, and without restriction, and without that ableist stinkeye.
Being able to take digital notes improves my grade by a full letter.
#AutChat A5
Wait, I have more to say.
Give us digital copies of lecture slides and don't low-key accuse us of using it as a way to skip class. Like... do you know how much tuition is?!? And like... skip class on purpose, in this economy?!?
Like, if I miss class, it's 'cause I'm sick.

#AutChat Random comment. I got pulled aside in my doctoral program and told "[my] writing obscured my ideas." I was a brat in the remedial seminar I was sent to because it felt ridiculous to have learn grammar rules again... but it was good that it happened. 1/
A5: Big lectures can prove difficult with hundreds of students in the same class. If a class can be delivered online, do it. Make sure that disability support services are easily accessible and that their recommendations are implemented. #AutChat
Feel free to suggest ideas for #AutChat topics (or offer to help write questions)! For scheduled topics, see autchat.com
Every topic we've ever run: autchat.com/all-topics/ We're happy to rerun past chats we haven't revisited in a while, especially now that we’re on a new platform!
Reminder: We don’t currently create transcripts of #AutChat.
We’ll update these intro/outro posts if that changes in the future.
Next Sunday’s #AutChat is on Autism Acceptance Month. April 26, 1pm Pacific / 4pm Eastern / 20:00 UTC / 9pm BST on BlueSky. autchat.com/autism-accep...
If you know anyone who might be interested and is autistic or similarly neurodivergent, we encourage you to invite them.
The scheduled #AutChat is wrapping up. It's fine to keep chatting, join in late, or use the tag at other times!
I want a quiet room in every building.
I want institutions to collab with disability rights organizations and give them authority to step in for us where schools are required to follow their recommendations.
And much much much lower tuition. Or no tuition at all.

A4: finding a few people who actually care about ideas and learning... but you have to find them. I thought everyone would be there for that reason, but no matter how far you go a certain number of students don't seem actually be interested in the ideas and learning. [Even in PhD progs.] #AutChat
Q5: What would you change about the higher education system to make it more accessible? #AutChat
A4: I didn’t enjoy my first university experience but came out with some very good friends. The second university was very full on (working full time, studying part time). The lecturers made it worth the effort - I had the privilege of studying under an amazing feminist economics lecturer. #AutChat
#AutChat A4: Honestly, I haven't. I mean, there are things I enjoy, but none of them have been specific to school. The only reason I bothered going back for this most recent round of attempts is that I'm trying to get into ministry and no one takes you seriously in ministry without a degree.
To me, I feel like both community college and grad school gave me ways to grow more independent in ways that just weren't possible in public schools.
I feel like it helped my individuality and independence to really grow.
#AutChat A4
OMG my community college had easy access to lounges where people knew to keep quiet, so I had a lot easier time there.
University was so difficult!!! Everything was noisy, and the "quiet" spaces were too spread apart.
#AUtChat
Q4: What aspects of attending college or university have you enjoyed? #AutChat
A3: Quiet space to decompress.
I love what’s happened to my university since after I finished my degree - they do a lot of widening access work and became the first in the UK to be accredited as ‘autism friendly’. I feel very proud to now work there. #AutChat
I also think part of the differences had to do with the way instructors treated us.
Evening instructors seem to treat their students way differently than regular daytime instructors.
Maybe they all realize we're juggling jobs and families along with class. They get it.
#AutChat
In community college, they treated me like an adult, and so I was able to make it through ok despite the lack of accommodations.
At university, I went back to being treated like a kid, and my grades were a lot lower as a result.
Grad school was like community college. Easier.
#AutChat A3
To be honest though, even without accommodations, college was easier than high school with accommodations.
At least in community college, anything I needed as a formal accommodation was just automatically provided to me informally by instructors when I asked.
#AutChat A3
I had weekly meetings with a counselor, but the problem was that they didn't keep any of my appointment times.
They ran so far late that sometimes I wouldn't get in to see them until an hour late.
They didn't give any kind of useful feedback or assistance or advice or anything.
#AutChat A3
#AutChat A3: Evening classes have been mentioned, and those were certainly helpful, if only because I benefit from being nocturnal in general. But the program I'm in now is very self-paced and has one competency per course, with flexibility in presentation, and that's done wonders for me.
Even if you didn’t pass your high school exams, that resets at the age of 25. High school marks no longer needed.
This gives people who struggled in high school a second chance.
#AutChat
In my home country you pass your senior high school exams, you get into university. There’s none of this letters of recommendation, inspirational essay, show commitment to your community extracurricular networking bullshit.
Highly recommend.

Same here - the campus was practically deserted at 6pm, it tended to be mature students in the classes who were easier to communicate with, and only 20 people in a lecture instead of hundreds. #AutChat
It's hard to say what I needed, but there weren't really any conversations around the topic.
If I accepted ANY accommodations, they told me that all my credits would be non-transferable to university.
So I had to go without accommodations the whole way through.
#AutChat A3
Q3: What accommodations have you needed? Requested or not. #AutChat
OMG I loved evening classes.... #AutChat
