#Rust on #Clematis virginiana caused by #Aecidium clematidis, so named because the id of Puccinia sp. is not possible as the alternate host is unknown (Les Clayes-sous-Bois, FR). Found for the first time on a path I walk at least once a week. 2024 is definitely a year for rusts!

(2/3) The first one, whose identification is limited to #Aecidium euphorbiae, showcases leaves transformed into a fantastic, vibrant yellow hue, with honey-colored spermogonia.

#Rust on #Thalictrum minus caused by #Aecidium thalictri (syn. #Puccinia recondita s.l.). Not possible to determine the species at this stage, but exciting discovery of the day, with the abundance of aecia on Berberis (Chenôve, FR).

(1/2) #Rust on #Clematis vitalba caused by #Aecidium clematidis, so named as the Puccinia sp. identification is not possible because host plant alternation is unknown...

(4/5) The second #rust fungus is #Aecidium euphorbiae, here with aecia/aeciospores (I). The species (Uromyces sp.) cannot be identified as several rusts of Fabaceae have this spurge as aecial host. Maybe U. striatus as several fields around are cultivated with Medicago sativa.

#Rust on meadow buttercup (#Ranunculus acris) caused by #Aecidium ranunculi-acris, here with nice clusters of aecia, not found in previous years (Les Clayes-sous-Bois, FR). Possibly Uromyces sp. or Puccinia perplexans as meadow foxtail (Alopecurus pratensis) is present at few cm.

#Rust on #Valerianella sp. (?) caused by #Aecidium valerianellae (?), found on #Larzac cornices (Creissels, FR). Maybe #Puccinia gladioli (rather than P. cynodontis?) as orange aecia turning brown distributed on the entire leaf suggest systemic infection. No 🔬 / K&S to confirm.

The life of a #rust is difficult when its host suffers so much from drought: here #Aecidium clematidis on old man's beard (#Clematis vitalba), with aecia that have been sun-bleached and practically "lyophylized" in planta (Millau, FR).

#Rust on crowfoot-leaved hare's-ear (Bupleurum ranunculoides) likely caused by #Aecidium schroeppelianum (rather than Puccinia bupleuri as infected leaves are deformed and only spermogonia & aecidia are present). Another amazing rare alpine pathosystem! 🥰

(2/3) #Aecidium euphorbia, here with only aecidia (not possible to identifiy the rust species without the primary host 🤔).

(3/3) The plant transformation is caused by #Aecidium euphorbiae or #Uromyces sp. (sometimes called Uromyces pisi complex) as the identification of the species is depending of the primary host, usually undetermined (K&S 2015). Here the tips of the plants strewn with spermogonia.
