This undated head and shoulders self portrait miniature by Australian artist Mary Morton Allport seems timeless even though it is from the mid-1800s. The watercolor on ivory portrait, likely made in Tasmania, is surrounded by a border of seaweed pasted on backing paper in an oval dark brass frame. The artist depicts herself as a young Ophelia with dark, curly hair, styled with a blue ribbon, waving in the wind. Her expression is focused with a wide-eyed stare. She's wearing a dark blue dress with some black detailing visible at the neckline and sleeves. She holds a slender, dark-colored object, possibly a thin cane or wand, in her hand. Allport is thought to be Australia's first professional female artist, lithographer, etcher and engraver and is well-known for landscapes and portrait miniatures. This portrait is part of the permanent collection of the Allport Library and Museum of Fine Arts in Hobart, Tasmania which commemorates the Allport family's contribution to Tasmanian history and culture. Born May 17, 1806 in Birmingham, England, Mary Morton Chapman married Joseph Allport December 20, 1826. Mary, Joseph and their son Morton emigrated to Australia in 1831. The Allports arrived in Van Diemens Land in December 1831 via the Platina. As early as 1832, she advertised that she would paint miniatures on request and is known to have given art lessons to her children and others. Allport died June 10, 1895 at her home “Aldridge Lodge” in Tasmania, Australia, aged 88. She is buried at Queenborough Cemetery, Hobart.
