Altered book journal. I had written a loving journal entry over a page I had already altered. I never posted it. Last night I got angry and distorted the old entry and wrote some not-so-loving words instead. Anger is probably my favorite stage of grief because it's a really simple and uncomplicated emotion for me, and not one I am used to anymore. My anger is a recognition that I have been treated unjustly, and giving myself a lot of space for this rage is a kind and loving thing to do for myself. I'm all I have, and so I have to be able to live with myself.

It's an art journal page with an off-white background and punched letters from the alphabet going around the page. Starting at the bottom left, going straight up the side, across the top, down the right side, and across the bottom, and then there are numbers in the middle. The digits and letters form sort of an abstract spread of color and pattern.

Started by creating colorful alphabet letters and numbers. Then turned it into art as they became overall pattern and color.

Pictured is the open central stairwell at Audreys Books in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, framed in dark mahogany wood, with bookshelves full of books visible in the background upstairs, on the landing, and on the lower level visible past the landing. Flowing from the corner of the opening on the main level is a scroll of paper that goes up to the ceiling then loops down several times before flowing back up over the ledge of the opening.

Pictured is the opposite side of the stairwell opening in the first photo, showing a reddish orange vintage typewriter on a stand out of which is flowing a scroll of paper. A later section of the scroll can be seen flowing back over the edge of the opening beside the typewriter. There is also a smaller Möbius strip, made up of the front and back matter of the book, sitting on a shelf below the typewriter.

My newest altered book photograph, "The Consumption of Mary Ash." A faux-document of a true story of a 13-year old girl who died of Tuberculosis Eastern State Penitentiary. She had been incarcerated for arson.
