A small reddish brown rodent with large dark eyes, made more prominent by thick bright white eye-rings, sits huddled up on a branch in the winter. The Red Squirrel is about 11-13 inches long (including the tail), weighing in at about 5-8 ounces. The upper parts of the animal and the outside of the legs are chestnut red, grayish red, brownish red, or olive-red. The belly, chest, and chin are white. The squirrel has a long, bushy tail accounting for nearly a third of its total length. The tail is rusty; the hair on the tail is tipped with tawny-red. The squirrel is using the tail as a wrapper to keep warm in the cold weather because the wind chill is below zero.
When itβs cold, but youβve got a nice, fluffy tail to keep you warm. Red Squirrel (Tamiasciurus hudsonicus), our backyard, Lake Placid, NY (9 January 2025). wildadirondacks.org/adirondack-m...
