A period image of Union General William Tecumseh Sherman, famous for his Civil War ending "March to the Sea" overlaid with the meemish text "Happy Confederate History Month? Clearly I didn't burn enough shit." You sea, neo-confederates, slaver apologists, and the racist governments of the former southern Confederacy have declared that April as #confederateheritagemonth to commemorate the birthdays of losers Robert E. Lee, Stonewall Jackson, and all the other traitors who betrayed the United States of America to form their own failed country dedicated to the preservation and perpetuation of chattel slavery. At least, that was the claim. In actuality it was ecause they were all butthurt over the establishment of Dr. Martin Luther King day as a national holiday and couldn't stand having a black man or any black person so commemorated. April 9th 1865 was the date that Lee surrendered to Grant at Appomattox Courthouse, marking the functional end of the Confederacy after only four years of malignant existence. Your heritage is slavery, mine is burning your fucking house down. #ACW #americancivilwar #19thc @sonsofliberty.bluesky.social

This isn’t just of interest to me from an #AmericanCivilWar perspective, but also for historians who have armchair commentators critiquing their social media posts. I think we all should resist the urge to correct people, and it’s something I need to be better at personally.
Great to present at the @businesshistoryc.bsky.social at @imperialcollegeldn.bsky.social
My paper on #PR, war-mongering, political corruption, and commercial conflicts feels pretty relevant – despite focusing on the #AmericanCivilWar 160 odd years ago.
