The First 20 Popes

DEDICATION OF A SHRINE TO HERCULES, 1 JUNE 128 CE. OSPEDALE FATEBENEFRATELLI, ISOLA TIBERINA

"Sacred to Hercules of the House of Augustus, from the collection of the warehousemen of the second larger cohort and Diadumenus, slave of our Caesar, and Titus Flavius Crescens and the Galban workers; under the care of Hermes, slave of Gaius Mundicius Helpistus. Dedicated on the Kalends of June [June 1st] in the consulship of Marcus Iunius Mettius Rufus and Quintus Pomponius Maternus [128 AD]." So it seems the workers in the Horrea Galbana, the huge warehouses of Galba near the river-port of Rome in today's Testaccio district, had a nice whip round to fund a sacred space, a shrine or altar, to Hercules. The workers, imperial freedmen and slaves, were divided into three "cohorts", not military ones, but possibly corresponding to the three courtyards of the Horrea. Hercules, the human who became a god, was a natural divinity to link to Hadrian, emperor at the time. He was also connected to mercantile activity and the emergence from the bonds of slavery, which would also help to explain the devotion of the warehouse-men.

A #dedication of a #shrine to #Hercules is the subject of this week's #EpigraphyTuesday. Made in elegant rustic capitals, we can date it precisely to June 1, 128 CE. It's now on the wall of the fishpond cloister of the #Fatebenefratelli hospital on the #Tiber Island in #Rome. #AncientBluesky 🏺

Roman-period statue of a ‘Harpy’ found in Driffield Terrace, York. To me, it (loosely) resembles the Colchester sphinx, which is believed to have been placed on a tomb. Both items may be evidence for a taste of Egyptian style art in Roman Britain. 🏺 #Egyptology #AncientBluesky

SARCOPHAGUS WITH THE FOUR SEASONS, 270-280 CE. VATICAN MUSEUMS

This sarcophagus was acquired by Pius VI for the VM from its discoverers, and now holds a prominent position in the Belvedere Courtyard. It's tub-shaped, a lenòs, and, as often happens with such sarcophagi, has two lions savaging antelopes at the curved ends. From left to right, two on either side of the central figure, stand youthful male figures representing the Seasons: Winter, fully dressed in tunic and cloak, holding up a duck he has hunted; Spring, nude but for his cloak, with one arm bearing a branch with new leaves; Summer, also nude but for a cloak, holding a herdsman's staff; and Fall, holding a container of fruit and a freshly-hunted rabbit. At centre is the young male deceased with a peripetasma or curtain behind him, held up by Spring and Summer. The face has been carved for a male, but the figure is female, in a dress and stola.

#SarcophagusSaturday at the #VaticanMuseums gives us this odd C18 display of a very toned seminude reclining woman with a #Flavian hairdo, the lid to a different #sarcophagus than the one it's on, which shows the deceased flanked by the Four Seasons (not the band). 270-280 CE. #AncientBluesky 🏺

This exquisite golden lion may be of Lydian or Persian origin. It is unclear. If the latter, it may have been a spoil of the Persian wars dedicated to the oracle of Dodona (where it was found) by a member of the Ionian Greek elite.

FRESCO FRIEZE OF THE CEILING VAULT, DETAIL, C. 30 BCE. "STUDY", HOUSE "OF AUGUSTUS"

We could explore the decoration of this sole surviving room of the upper floor of the late Republican domus almost certainly wrongly called the House of Augustus for any trace of a reference to the Sicilian city of Syracusa, but in vain. Why would we do this? Because Suetonius tells us that Augustus had a "high-up" room he called his "Syracusa", which was a private space he used as a study or workshop. Why he called it Syracusa is an open question. This room is small and windowless like a bedroom. Restoration lasting 20 years pieced together fragments of the vaulted ceiling, and here we see the splendid painted frieze that lines both sides of the vault. Between two elegant frames is a wide band with lilies alternating with wild female faces displaying pointed ears, wide staring eyes, and a smiling open mouth with pearly teeth.
