>Warning Bells and Lucky Coins<

This was an odd combination of dark and sweet, and I loved it! While Mateo Navarro is the head of a Mexican cartel and all that entails, he has a soft spot for exploited women. He keeps it quiet, except when it comes to her.

Aria Vitale is in so far over her head, and I'm here for it. She's naΓ―ve and a bit foolish. Even still, I do admire her fire. She usually knows when to temper her sass, which is a saving grace.

Yes, the darkness sometimes made me squeamish in an ick way, but so much of it was scalding hot. Aye, aye, aye! πŸ”₯πŸ₯΅πŸ”₯ So. Very. Hot!

The twists were pretty obvious, but that didn't impact my enjoyment. They played out well, leaving me satisfied.

I do recommend reading the series in order, especially Nico and Selena's book, as there is overlap that may leave you scratching your head.

I received an author's copy of the audio book. The narrators are Phillipa Miller and Duncan Prescott. I enjoyed them both, but I really wish this was in duet. Duncan has a mild Spanish accent that really set him apart and was noticeably missing when it was Aria's POV.

Stolen Future Forged from Similar Pasts

Poor Verona Moretti. Being forced to marry one-time childhood friend turned persona non grata Luca Vitale would be bad enough, but when he turns out to be a giant alphahole? Man, oh man. Good thing she's got some naivety and kindness in her court.

Now, I read the second book in the series first, so I knew where this was going, but to actually read it was definitely worth it.

-- Book quote
'Tears are in my eyes as we walk down the silent aisle. I don’t feel like a bride at all. No, I feel like a prisoner being taken to jail for a life sentence.'
-- Verona Moretti

I love how she proves him wrong at every turn. His rose, or rather hate, colored glasses allow him to make so many assumptions. I love how he can't comprehend what he sees. Of course, once things start to click, he still manages to make missteps because his communication skills can use an overhaul. πŸ˜„

There are twists and turns. Some are obvious, some less so. All in all, a good, dark foray into this Mafia family. Oh, it's also really steamy with many BDSM elements.

I received an author's copy of the audio book. The narrators, Cecily Foster and Vincent Skye, are engaging with the emotions matching the words and situations. I really like them.

(Book review 1/2)

Author's note: 'Keeping My Girl' is Nico Vitale’s story, and although it is a standalone, it would be better enjoyed after reading 'Keeping My Bride'.

Dark, Yet Lovely

This sucked me in with a seemingly sweet childhood crush, but the darkness lurked. For Selina "Lina" McCall, oh, how I wanted to wrangle her mother for the things she did. Deplorable, absolutely deplorable. And while the impact to him was negligible in the grand scheme of things, I love how Nicholas "Nico" Vitale spent a decade searching for her.

'Selina has been living with my family for the past six months. I would like to say it took that long to fall in love with her, but I’d be lying. It only took the first day. Maybe even the first hour.'
-- Nico Vitale

I love Nico's patience as Selina tries to recover from decades of abuse. He's attentive and gives her a level of kindness that she's never known. He's also occasionally overbearing. I can't blame him, but I like the dynamics it creates. I wholeheartedly enjoy their interactions, sweet and spicy.

(Book review, 2/2)

Inside these pages, you will find some of the most despicable acts that can be forced upon a woman, including but not limited to human trafficking, NC, and physical and mental abuse. There is additional violence against others, too, some of which you may applaud.

You may have noticed the author's note about recommended reading. I didn't read the first book and was able to follow along with relative ease. There are a couple of parts where there are so many people and names thrown in that it didn't all click, but I figured out enough to enjoy the book.

When it comes to the next book, that story starts here and leaves a cliffhanger as part of that setup, but Nico and Selina are well onto getting their HEA.

I received an author's copy of the audio book. The narrators are Alan Stone and Stella Rose. They are good choices for these characters, and easy to listen to and understand.
