Here’s a sharply critical note in response to Aontú’s position: --- Aontú’s Dangerous Fantasy: Leaving Europe Defenceless and Deferring to Putin’s Veto Aontú’s insistence on rigid Irish neutrality in the face of Russian aggression is not just outdated – it’s reckless. While Ukrainians fight and die for democracy and European stability, Aontú proposes that Ireland sit on the sidelines, bound by the so-called "triple lock" that effectively gives Russia – a serial violator of international law – a veto over Irish peacekeeping missions. In what world does it make sense to let Vladimir Putin decide where Irish troops can or cannot be deployed? Aontú’s policy does exactly that, by demanding UN Security Council approval for every overseas mission, despite Russia’s clear abuse of its permanent seat to block any international accountability. Even more troubling is Aontú’s unwillingness to engage with European defence collaboration, pretending that Ireland’s security can somehow be insulated from the instability sweeping across the continent. They want Ireland to enjoy the peace and prosperity of Europe while refusing to play any real part in defending it – an isolationist, self-serving stance that undermines solidarity. Aontú cannot claim to stand for sovereignty and peace while surrendering decision-making power to Moscow. If neutrality means paralysis in the face of tyranny, then it is not a virtue – it is a liability.
