Multicolored butterfly with predominantly orange wings that are marked with patches of brilliant red, tan, bold black squiggles enclosing white zones and a wave-like white line tracing the serrated trailing edges. The abdomen is bright orange like the wings with bulging orange eyes. It rests on a group of small pink flowers with yellow centers as it sips nectar in bright sunshine against a background of green vegetation.
The topside view of the same butterfly revealing boldly colored wings with a central median area of black-flecked orange ringed with black, having an arcing white bar in the middle of the black wingtip. It rests on green leaves with a few bright patches of dappled sunshine out of focus in the background.
Something lacy would be nice! The Malayan lacewing, #Cethosia hypsea, is a #Nymphalidae #butterfly active at forest edges & in open sun on #Bornea. Bright colors warn predators it is unpalatable #aposematic. Larval host is passionflower. An easy find at #Deramakot Forest Reserve #Sabah #Malaysia

Head-on view of a pair of mating pair of white, blue, and black spotted bright-yellow panther-spotted grasshoppers with green wings and amazing blue- and white-banded antennae, resting vertically on a stem against a dark background. Their incredible spotted appearance is the prominent feature.
Mother Nature often makes her messages very, very obvious. #Poecilotettix panthera, the panther-spotted #grasshopper is distasteful. This spectacularly #aposematic species encourages potential predators to “learn” this by feeding, resting & mating in plain sight. #MolinoBasin #Arizona #Acrididae
This shag carpet caterpillar sports a body cloaked in what looks like bright red fuzzy yarn, with bright white, red and black feathery extensions. These attention-grabbing colors likely advertise a potent (and likely painful) surprise waiting for any creature who dares explore the pile of this carpet!
“Groovy shag carpet, man!?” Not so fast! #Shag carpet #caterpillar, #Prothysana felderi, may look soft & inviting, but bright, conspicuously-colored #rainforest #insects are usually dressed that way to warn potential predators about their nasty chemical or physical defenses. #Ecuador #Aposematic
🧪Why does warning signal variability persist in #aposematic species? Our new @sse-evolution.bsky.social paper explores this using data from 64,741 🤯 A.plantaginis, raised over 25 generations. Spoiler: no evidence that life-history traits constrain warning colours! academic.oup.com/evolut/advan...
