A small bug, 2 or 3 mm. long, belly up, swimming on the surface of the water. An oval head, wider than long, a triangle-shaped abomen. Two long legs are stretched out wide on either side. These are used in a rowing motion. Two smaller legs curve away from the body, and two are curved down to hug the abdomen. There are two antennae, angled out parallel to the long legs. The body is black and brown; there are creamy patches on the head. Background; the bug is in a white bowl with pond water; detritus blurred out.

Happy Insect Week!
Day 5: Riverflies
π Fridayβs finale is a celebration of all riverfly larvae!
They may be small, but theyβre mighty when it comes to monitoring river health. Theyβre natureβs water quality indicators, and we love them for it! π

The usually unseen fascinates me. I guess my primary sense is ocular like most Homo sapiens. Enjoy this snippet from The Deep.

Bryozoan colony! π² It's like a living water filter, sucking up all the bad stuff in Oklahoma's lakes. Awesome little invertebrates, this lot! Tiny little guys, working together like a well-oiled machine.

A larvae of *corydalus texanus* (Megaloptera:Corydalidae) seen digging a burrow in a sandy stream bank in order to pupate. The larvae is large, dark and leather. The most distinctive feature is its large sclerotized head with mean-looking mandibles.
It must be #Dobsonfly season. I just spent 3 days on the Colorado River and we saw no less than 5 #Hellgrammite larvae crawling on the bank. These aquatic species dig a burrow in the bank to pupate before the short-lived adults emerge to reproduce. #AquaticInvertebrates #streamEcology
From my foray this weekend. Springtime Fairy Shrimp (Eubranchipus vernalis). This male has claspers to grasp the female in mating. They live briefly in the Spring cold waters of vernal pools, eating algae & tiny critters. Western Massachusetts 4.13.25

Amazing camouflaging observed in the Broadclub #cuttlefish (Sepia latimanus). Definitely check out the video.
Although scientists are still not sure how the cuttlefish choose which disguise to put on, their #camouflage remains awe-inspiring.
