Uil in vlucht.

A Short-eared Owl flies past the camera, left to right. The background of the image is pale - buff grassland below, and blue sky above. The owl has both its wings outspread. It's pale cream, with dark flecks on its neck and breast, and dark tips to its wings. The centre of its face is very pale, with darker flecks around the outside and some dark feathering at the top of its curved bill. Its bright yellow eye is heavily ringed in black.

A Short-eared Owl flies straight towards the camera, low to the ground, so that the whole of the background is the grassy field over which it's flying. Both its wings are outspread, and nearly touch the edges of the image. The owl is pale cream, with dark flecks on its neck, breast and overwings. The centre of its face is very pale, with darker flecks around the outside. Its bright yellow eyes are heavily ringed in black.

A Short-eared Owl flies past the camera, starting to make a banking turn to its right. Its wings are spread, with the left up and forwards and the right down and back, so that they cut diagonally across the photo. The background is very bright, with shining highlights. The owl's underside is very pale cream, with some dark flecks and patches on its neck and breast, tail, and wings. Its feet, tucked beneath it, are also feathered in pale cream. It is rim-lit by the strong sun behind it.

A Short-eared Owl glides on a flight path towards and just to the left of the photographer, in very low light. The owl has both wings spread, the right one almost horizontal and the left held up at 2 o'clock. Not much of its body can be seen, except for the brown fleck markings on the cream of its head and breast. Its underwings are pale cream with dark splodges, and the ends of the flight feathers are brown. The centre of its face is white, with darker feathers around the periphery, and its bright yellow eyes are ringed in black.

A Short-earedOwl rises up out of a field of rough grass, after diving unsuccessfully after prey. Its broad wings are raised and then bent over at nearly 90° with the effort of lifting it from the ground, and its legs and feet are trailing, talons still curved as if to capture prey. Behind the owl are a dry stone wall and some dark trees.

A Short-eared Owl in half-profile, flying towards the left of shot with its wings outspread on the diagonal - left up and right down. It is strongly backlit by late afternoon sunshine, so the owl looks slightly hazy. Behind it are some out-of-focus trees, reduced to circles of light and dark bokeh.

A Short-eared Owl flies directly towards the camera, both wings outstretched on a diagonal - the right wing up and the left down. Its gaze seems to be fixed on the photographer. It is flying above a field of rough grass, with a blur of trees on the horizon behind it. It is mainly mottled brown and cream, but the centre of its face is very pale. It has heavy black markings around its yellow eyes, and a mottled ring around the edge of its face with a pale ring outside that. The rings enclose and define its face, a little like a Victorian women's bonnet.
What's that I hear? It's #SuperbOwlSunday? Let's go!
I never see short-eared Owls face-on like this without being reminded of Victorian women's bonnets.

A very pale Short-eared Owl flies right to left, shot from below against a pale sky, so the whole image is quite high-key. The owl's body, underwings and face are pale cream with dark flecks, especially around its neck and the edges of its face. Its eyes are large, the irises deep yellow.
Two Short-eared Owls in confrontation. The closer one to the camera is nearly at the right hand edge of the frame, and is out of focus. The further one, at the left of the image, is flying low towards the first bird, its wings spread wide and its gaze intently fixed on the rival it is chasing.
A Kestrel on a wooden post in the middle of the field is being approached by a Short-eared Owl. The Kestrel has its back to the camera, and is spreading its tail and wings, ready to take off to meet the approaching threat. The owl is staring intently at the rival it is preparing to attack.

A Short-eared Owl flies right to left above a field of rough, brown grass. There are some leafless trees at the distant horizon. The owl is flecked brown and tan on its neck and back and the upper surfaces of its wings, and its face, belly and underwings are cream with brown markings. Its feet, which it carries tucked underneath its belly, are wet and muddy from hunting in the wet grass.

10/01/2025, 4.13pm. -1°, but feeling more like -3. The dipping sun almost down behind the horizon. I'm in my car, pouring coffee from a flask, and looking forward to turning on the engine and putting the heated seat to "griddle". There are only two other cars left on the lane, and no other people visible. And suddenly an owl flies past, over the field to the south of the lane. "Oh well, never mind," I say, and carry on pouring my coffee. It flies past again, dives, and comes back up. "Bugger," I say, depositing flask and mug, grabbing the camera, and scrambling coatless from the car. Settings all wrong by now, of course, so the scene through the viewfinder is black. By the time I've adjusted them I can't see the owl any more, and by now I'm seriously cold, but then it reappears, heading up the field towards me. It semaphores a quick 'J' ("Hello to you too!") while looking over at the north side field behind me, but rather than crossing the lane it curves round at the top of the southern field and flies along the hedge line, where I lose sight of it. By now I'm shivering from head to foot, but as I get back in the car and turn the heater to 'roast' I'm giggling with elation at an unexpected and magical encounter. ISO 4000; f/7.1; 1/400 sec.
