Aloë 'Blue Elf'. This plant is tough as nails. It will go into the front yard in the next couple of weeks together with a few cacti and two more Aloë.

Haworthiopsis attenuata with an unfortunately etiolated Haworthia emelyae v. major. I'm getting the etiolation under control. What surprises me a lot more is that this plant has survived.

Haworthia cuspidata var. cuspidata. Unfortunately a victim to etiolation but is recovering. It also features a variegated offshoot.

Pollination in Aloe (& kin) is typically by sunbirds perching on the inflorescences foraging for nectar. #Asphodelaceae

The many-stemmed, shrubby or scrambling aloes, with unspotted, spirally arranged leaves and visible internodes, are now in Aloiampelos (“climbing #Aloe”). This is Aloiampelos cilaris cultivated at the Huntington Bot. Gard. in San Marino, California. #Asphodelaceae #TropicalBotany #botany 🌾🧪🌱

Collage of two photos. The left photo shows a cross-section through a branch from a juniper. More wood was deposited on the underside of the branch. The right photo shows a cut stub of a branch from the tree aloe. It too has more wood on the underside of the branch.

Has anyone studied the reaction “wood” in Aloidendron? On the left is compression wood in Juniperus virginiana (#Cupressaceae). On the right is something very similar in A. dichotomum. More studies of monocot wood anatomy, please! #Asphodelaceae #anatomy #botany 🌾🧪

The spectacular tree aloes, cultivated to great effect in S. California, are now separate from Aloe & very appropriately called Aloidendron (“Aloe-tree”). Here’s Aloidendron dichotomum in San Diego. #Asphodelaceae #TropicalBotany #Aloe #botany 🌾🧪🌱

I love the interesting leaf arrangements in Aloe. They are typically spirally arranged & none shows it better than A. polyphylla (📷: John Dransfield). Occasionally they’re distichous, as in A. suprafoliata. #Aloe #Asphodelaceae #TropicalBotany #botany 🌾🧪🌱

Some #Aloe species grow intermixed with grasses & mimic their foliage. Their leaves are thin & flexible but still a bit succulent. This is Aloe cooperi. Without the flowers, it might easily be overlooked as “just a grass.” #Asphodelaceae #TropicalBotany #botany 🌾🧪🌱

Aloe ranges from Tropical & s. Africa to Madagascar & Arabian Peninsula & nw. India. This is the gorgeous Aloe castanea from southern Africa. The epithet means “chestnut” & describes the unusual color of the nectar-rich flowers. #Asphodelaceae #TropicalBotany #Aloe #botany 🌾🧪🌱
