"Where It All Went Wrong: The Case Against John Howard"
by @amyremeikis.bsky.social
On the thirtieth anniversary of John Howard coming to power, a searing analysis of the untouchable prime minister: how the ‘great economic manager’ sold our future. 26Feb2026 #auspol #AusHistory #politics #BookSky
A picture showing the covers of six books regarding the life and government of former Australian Prime Minister, Gough Whitlam.
I believe my Gough Whitlam reading list is somewhat complete. Time to settle down with a wee dram and have a good read 📚🥃😊
(PS: I also have "The Dismissal" by Kelly & Bramston as well as John Kerr's "Matters for Judgement")

Took a walking tour of The Rocks in Sydney. The guide paid her respects to the First Nations custodians - and thereafter completely ignored them. 🙄 I thought that took some doing considering she covered the 1st 30
years or so - so you know a bit happened. 😢 #aushistory
Vintage John Broadwood & Sons piano, of a similar vintage to the one played by some chap named Ludwig Beethoven.
The living room of Hambledon Cottage.
The kitchen, which is in a building separate to the main house.
This device is an 18th century water purifier, which uses porous stone to filter water. You pour your collected water into the top. The water is slowly absorbed by the stone, while dirt and contaminants are left behind. What you get at the bottom is purified drinking water.
Some photos from inside Hambledon Cottage, Parramatta, including a vintage John Broadwood & Sons piano.

Certainly when it came to "liberal" values. People forget how Labor and the union movt fought the Fraser Govt allowing Vietnamese refugees in the 70s, for example.
Precursors of Howard & co.
This from a review I wrote of Klaus Neumann's excellent history, Across the Seas:

The sentence of transportation had a double impact when it came to colonisation. Irish men and women were exiled from their native land and rolled into the business of colonising Australian territories. CON is out on 1 November. #auslit #tasmania #aushistory #irish #Eire
Before praising Tony Abbott (and seeking his return to politics), Steve Price really needs to read:
"The Road to Ruin" by Niki Savva and "The Short and Excruciatingly Embarrassing Reign of Captain Abbott" by @andrewpstreet.bsky.social #auspol #AusHistory #books #BookSky
Snap! I saw a billboard for this in the Brisbane CBD yesterday. I can’t fathom how Abbott would revise Australian history. I can only imagine The Dark Emu Story is beyond his comprehension.

Perth friends! you might be interested in a new audio history walk! Visit sites in the central Perth & learn about the people who opposed conscription in WW1.
If you're NOT in Perth, you can still hear the audio and see pics of some of the sites...

Cartoon showing Jack Lang fighting a figure labelled "Banks" while the bodies of Labor leaders are scattered around. A figure behind him is about to stab him in the back.
Cartoon shows Jack Lang as the last Labor leader standing in the battle against the banks, but about to be stabbed in the back. Imagine any leader these days being standing up to the financial markets...

I've managed to find time to reread a few pages of my favourite non-fiction book on my birthday.

Please remember: 26Jan25, then Deputy Liberal Leader, now Federal Liberal Leader, Sussan Ley defended the British arrival in Australia, insisting they didn't come to Australia "to destroy or to pillage". Um, yes, that's exactly what invasion, dispossession, colonisation is. #auspol #AusHistory
It's always funny to hear my fellow Australians talk about the horrors of the American Japanese Internment Camps during WW2 when they don't know we ran them as well.

A digital map documenting Australia's massacres of First Nations peoples from 1788 to 1930 has been finalised. 😢 #AusHistory #IndigenousHistory
The Liberal party notoriously criticised these movements bc they did not believe white Australians should feel guilt for colonisation. They (mostly) backed Howard's view of aus history that settlement should be 1. Celebrated or 2. Ignored.
Thats why they love 26 jan sm.

Age an Australian garden by checking to see if they have this pink flowering "Queen Elizabeth" rose with thick base stems on it - meaning it was planted mid century:

Start looking, and you see them *everywhere*.

@wilstracke.bsky.social is spot on. Jan26 is not a day to celebrate, unless your aim is to celebrate invasion, dispossession, colonisation and mass murder. Always was, always will be, Aboriginal land. #InvasionDay #AusHistory vt.tiktok.com/ZS6tBPpQ2/
Given our Australian Federal MPs are (mostly) older, white men, I wonder how many are even aware of the Australian Wars (aka the Frontier Wars) between Indigenous Australians and the white colonists. Rachel Perkins' 3-part series is excellent viewing (available on SBS On Demand). #auspol #AusHistory

Prime Minister of Australia, disappears while swimming near Portsea, Victoria, and is presumed drowned. He has had a swimming pool named after him since 1967. 🤣🤭
