Hey, #AutSky — I missed this excellent Lingua Franca/John Summers piece on publication a year ago. It hasn't lost an iota of relevance, though.
Why are so many parents and "experts" seduced by holistic narratives around autism? Enticing — and hollow — narratives date to the '60s.
Figured out why I have insomnia so often. I have pathological demand avoidance (part of my autism). This means:
- An overactive mind, struggling to “switch off”
- Resistance to sleep-related demands: anxiety or avoidance behaviours when faced with the expectation to sleep.

Forced isolation wasn't an accident. It was policy. For disabled and neurodivergent people, being cut off from community has never been just a personal misfortune. It's been systemic, deliberate, and deeply rooted in historical practices of segregation, institutionalization, and erasure. Neurodivergent people today still face the consequences of systems built to isolate and those systems didn't disappear. They evolved.
