#AutismArtOfThePossible
Huge thanks to the venerable @annmemmott.bsky.social for posting threads on each session of @at-autism.bsky.social's #AutismArtOfThePossible conference yesterday. What an incredible day.
Get yourself a cup of tea and have a read.
Brilliant day at the @at-autism.bsky.social conference #AutismArtofThePossible in London yesterday. Catching up with friends and meeting new ones. Outstanding speakers and discussions. Travelling home today with fire in the belly and ideas swirling. #Autism

How to get star struck at an Autism conference? Sit at a table with Damian Milton 😅 #AutismArtOfThePossible
#AutismArtOfThePossible
From my perspective, a really fabulous conference with so many good speakers and vital topics.
Do get in contact with @at-autism.bsky.social and team if you need further information, ideas and signposting.
#AutismArtOfThePossible
Final conference thread - Dr Damian Milton, sociologist and social psychologist who specialises in autism research, and is an autism rights advocate. He is a Senior Lecturer at the University of Kent and chair of the Participatory Autism Research Collective (PARC)/
/conference now going to discussions and a break. After the break, a separate thread for the speech by Dr Damian Milton.
PS this is not an 'official' thread - I just work with this lovely team and am very keen to ensure their message gets a really good audience.

Next, Ken Greaves, a Specialist Chartered Psychologist with some 35 years of experience working within education, health, social care and work environments.
Embracing Change: It's not just about personal growth. It's about making a meaningful impact with a whole community/
#AutismArtOfThePossible
Joe Powell, talking to the conference about his own background e.g. www.bihr.org.uk/about-us/mee...
Joe discusses the challenge of organisations that say they 'get it' re autism, but demonstrate exactly the opposite in language & attitudes/
#AutismArtOfThePossible
Next part of this fabulous conference from @at-autism.bsky.social with Alia Lewis and Ken Greaves.
Alia starting by describing her specialist work at Family Law Advice for the Neurodivergent Community (FLANC). flanc.org.uk
Like many parents, Linda and husband have had to put in place a lot of thinking about the future, taking wise advice and hoping that his future will include people who truly love Christopher for who he is.
Amen to that, from me, as a parent.
#AutismArtOfThePossible
Linda reflects on taking Christopher to parties he hated, reflecting on 'Who was that for?'
Realising as a parent that they had to give him things he enjoyed.
Finding a lovely school was a huge part of success for Christopher/

Speakers taking questions from the room, sat on chairs in front of delegates
Incredibly inspiring morning #AutismArtOfThePossible @at-autism.bsky.social from schools to hospitals & social care - working with compassion, empathy, rights based approaches and team work across professions enriching the lives of autistic people 💕
#AutismArtOfThePossible
Lucy Dunstan from Changing Our Lives speaking about her advocacy role within the case above, and what she found when working with Camden.
True integrated working, where the whole team were on side and wanted the best for Kasibba and others in their care/
#AutismArtOfThePossible
Andre talks through the relationship-based practice that created a whole team who were invested in getting the right outcome for autistic people stuck on wards. This includes the social workers, care co-ordinators, Judges, hospital staff, & those holding all of the budgets/
#AutismArtOfThePossible
Andrew Reece & Lucy Dunstan, next. Bios can be found at www.atautism.org/at-autism-co...
Andrew begins by talking about Kasibba, and the journey to get her out of hospital. Huge fees, stress & effort against barriers, but Camden managed it. How?../
Just a suggestion, but how about having a look at what’s being shared on the #AutismArtOfThePossible tag rather than reacting to clickbait nonsense from HM the King’s opposition?
I’m referring to UK politics, but maybe there’s some general ideas of interest elsewhere.
#AutismArtOfThePossible
Ruth Moyse talks about her past research on autistic children and schools. Every child who wasn't able to attend school said they wished they could attend. But they can't do it. It's impossible for them.
It's not school 'refusal'. They can't access the school.
Many thanks to @annmemmott.bsky.social for sharing her reflections on our conference today.
#AutismArtOfThePossible
I am doing separate threads throughout the day, headed with the same #AutismArtOfThePossible tag.
Saves us from reading ultra-long threads.
it's about education that is based on the right foundations, with and by autistic people. It's about research that leads to the right outcomes, again working with and for autistic people. It's about advocacy & being a good role model, recruiting allies & champions
#AutismArtOfThePossible /
...not just within Psychiatry, but across the whole of society, as well as the rising problems from some politicians worldwide and from some research teams clinging to deficit-models.
A strong challenge to the notion of 'deficit' about autism, with Psychiatry/
#AutismArtOfThePossible
Now Catherine Dakin speaking at #AutismArtOfThePossible. Late dx Neurodivergent (Autistic, ADHD) parent, and Autism Specialist Consultant Psychiatrist, Essex Partnership University NHS Foundation Trust.
Catherine talks about her own past, a lifetime of self-criticism rather than self-understanding/
Zahilah explains how many people have felt seen and validated, after years hearing nothing but 'deficit based' language and ideas about autism. Many healthcare professionals are having their practice and results transformed by the SPELL framework, e.g. Dentists/
#AutismArtOfThePossible
Next thread on #AutismArtOfThePossible, with speaker Zahilah Filzah, who worked as a consultant paediatrician and advisor to the Court for Children in Malaysia.
She is the founder of The Ark Autism Centre, which supports autistic individuals and their families from low-income communities/
Heba explains there isn't a magic 'intervention'. It's about getting to know the children, & doing the right thing for them. Using the professionals to skill up the staff, so the whole school can all join in and all support one another. Making it as inclusive as possible.
#AutismArtOfThePossible
Heba's school uses a 'storytelling ' structure - highly visual, fun things rather than highly structured, rule-based, tick-box learning. Lots of practical learning rather than intellectual tasks throughout. Outdoor play.
The school is the highest attaining school.

Thread on the #AutismArtOfThePossible conference held 8 October 2025 in Westminster by the fabulous team at @at-autism.bsky.social
@drruthmoyse.bsky.social is opening the autism conference, with Nicola Martin. Making clear this is based on a strengths-based, 'universal design' approach to change/
