One of the best parts of #BAVS2025 (other than the stellar, thought provoking papers) was witnessing @hosmeriana.bsky.social ‘s reaction to her first Punch & Judy show complete with sausage-stealing crocodiles 🐊

Excellent to attend and speak at the British Association of Victorian Studies 25th Anniversary Conference, and to hear its inspiring roundtable from presidents past and future. Isobel Armstrong on the future of the discipline: ‘Be dauntless’. #BAVS2025 @bavs-uk.bsky.social @engfac.bsky.social

Speaking at the British Association for Victorian Studies 25 year anniversary conference in Oxford #bavs2025 was a joy...doing so with #TeamRoehampton from @uni-roehampton.bsky.social
was even better.

A truly humbling reception at #BAVS2025 where I presented a practice-based paper that combined making and creative writing, using a Pattern of Perfection from @jenniebatchelor.bsky.social , on a panel with the exceptional Anouska Lester and Catherine Archer-Richardson. A wonderful, warm conference 💗

Wonderful to see so many old and new faces at BAVS’ 25th anniversary conference! #BAVS2025

It was particularly inspirational to hear from so many of our past presidents at the event’s closing panel. A fitting ending to a fantastic 3 days! #19thCentury #BAVSTRAVAGANZA

A special moment and throwback to my MSt presenting @engfac.bsky.social @ox.ac.uk on Wilde, ‘moral pestilence’ and epidemic influenza in the 1890s (at Wilde’s university) as part of @mediaandepidemics.bsky.social project for @bavs-uk.bsky.social #BAVS2025

A fascinating keynote by Lauren Goodlad on LLMs and Victorian Studies at #bavs2025 just now, making the key point that there is no such thing as a singular 'AI' - 'AI' is simply a marketing concept.

Lauren Goodlad is now giving a barn-storming final #BAVS2025 keynote on #AI - pictured below are some of her important reminders.

A key takeaway is that language in use is a *process*, not a *product* (see Herbert C Clark), which takes us back to Saussure's distinction b/w "langue" & "parole".

At #BAVS2025 I particularly enjoyed the Punch and Judy show, Pablo Mukherjee’s keynote, and this glorious cuneiform cylinder at the Ashmolean

I truly feel that @louisecreechan.bsky.social gave my favourite paper at #BAVS2025 - everyone go seek out her publications, which are contributing immensely to the study of literature, reading, and writing

Now @louisecreechan.bsky.social gives #BAVS2025 a truly fantastic paper arguing for critical neurodiversity studies to arrive in Victorian Studies.
L reads "The Lifted Veil" as neurodivergent: her voice recording of ideas echoes Latimer's self-conscious omniscient address to a future reader...

.@emilyjlm.bsky.social gives us a brilliant paper at #BAVS2025 about adapting sentiment analysis for Victorian texts. Current method is
1) confined to +/-
2) lexicons are made of 21stC tweets.
Here's a +/- map of HP7 - my students try this with David Copperfield, also episodic & peripatetic

Happy 25th birthday @bavs-uk.bsky.social! Thank you for the beautiful conference dinner and the fiendishly difficult quiz! Glorious Victorian architecture provided by Oxford Town Hall… it felt a bit like dining inside a wedding cake… #BAVS2025

Had a great time talking about prehistoric ghosts and haunted barrows at #BAVS2025 (ft. my own spooky barrow photo, naturally)

Amazing to hear about your research @janetteleaf.bsky.social and @ireadoldbooks.bsky.social - such a fun panel to be a part of!
